Yanny vs Laurel

I distinctly heard L aurel each time......yet so many heard Yanny, does anyone know how/why this works?  The ABC  said they would explain later but i had to turn the  radio off. 

Same thing as the blue vs the gold dress.  Some time ago.

I am waiting for my OH to get home to see what he hears.....He has been diagnosed with significant hearing loss whereas I have been told my hearing is as good now as it was 45 years ago.

My miscreant grandchildren swear that I have supersonic hearing just as my children did all those years ago.
