I am not anti gun, however I am very much for regulations which mean ppl have to lock their guns away securely. Before the current gun laws in Australia some had a cavalier attitude to firearms. I think it was really familiarity breeding contempt. My father who was a farmer had a gun to put down suffering animals and to get rid of vermin. We didn't think anything about it lurking behind the bedroom door, and neither did he I suppose. It wasn't loaded, but the ammo probably wasn't that far away. Now at least firearms are secured against the sort of tragedy as the link in the OP.

Perhaps, but I'd be interested to see the statistics relating to the number of people shot by outlaws compared to those shot by idiots.

This is what really whizzes me off...............

No charges will be laid regarding Engles' death.  The 26-year-old, who was a member of the military, died around 60 minutes later.

That is a clear-cut case of negligent homicide.........

Whenever someone invents a fool-proof gun, some fool will figure out a way to shoot an innocent victim with it.

Oh...........it happened in Oklahoma.......that explains it.....

Another Oklahoma experience:

An Oklahoma pharmacist has been sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole for first-degree murder in the shooting death of a teenager who tried to rob the south Oklahoma City pharmacy where he worked.

Confronted by two holdup men, Ersland pulled a gun, shot one of them in the head and chased the other away. Then, in a scene recorded by the drugstore's security camera, he went behind the counter, got another gun, and pumped five more bullets into Parker as he lay on the floor unconscious.

While these are percentages, not numbers, note the percentage of child accidental firearm deaths compared to all other ages.  Totally preventable and totally the fault of adults.

Also, the fact that the child suicides had the same access to firearms.  Totally the fault of adults.

Nearly two dozen people have died and more than 100 others have been injured in shootings across Sydney since the beginning of 2012. Ten suburbs account for almost 30 per cent of the city's gun violence.

And they ain't legal registered guns

And"

THERE is a gun battle going on in Australia. As bikie gang members and drug dealers gun each other down on a regular basis, sending fear through the community, authorities seem to be fighting a losing battle to keep firearms out of their hands.

Without scaremongering, here are the facts:

* There have been 39 people shot in Sydney this year, most related to an ongoing bikie war.

* Conservative estimates say there are more than a quarter-of-a-million illegal firearms in Australia.

* Gun ownership in Australia is back at pre-Port Arthur massacre levels.

* Carrying a gun is becoming more common and ingrained in outlaw culture.

* Gun amnesties barely put a dent in the number of weapons.

* Innocent people are being caught up in gun battles.

* There has been a steady increase in gun-related crimes over the past seven years.

You know, since Australia is not constrained by the US Constitution, there is no reason why the authorities can't set draconian punishment for those apprehended with an unlicensed firearm.

dont forget this at the end of the article

"In a separate accident last week, a three-year-old boy was in a serious condition after he was shot in the mouth by his four-year-old neighbour while the two were reportedly playing with a gun in Washington. Investigations are ongoing."
