A couple of reasons gun laws have been introduced here are:

1.  The knowledge that a firearm is on premises when Police knock at the door for whatever reason.

2.  Robbery of easily accessible firearms within domestic situations i.e. propped behind the bedroom door.

Perhaps, but I'd be interested to see the statistics relating to the number of people shot by outlaws compared to those shot by idiots.

Nearly two dozen people have died and more than 100 others have been injured in shootings across Sydney since the beginning of 2012. Ten suburbs account for almost 30 per cent of the city's gun violence.

And they ain't legal registered guns

THERE is a gun battle going on in Australia. As bikie gang members and drug dealers gun each other down on a regular basis, sending fear through the community, authorities seem to be fighting a losing battle to keep firearms out of their hands.

Without scaremongering, here are the facts:

* There have been 39 people shot in Sydney this year, most related to an ongoing bikie war.

* Conservative estimates say there are more than a quarter-of-a-million illegal firearms in Australia.

* Gun ownership in Australia is back at pre-Port Arthur massacre levels.

* Carrying a gun is becoming more common and ingrained in outlaw culture.

* Gun amnesties barely put a dent in the number of weapons.

* Innocent people are being caught up in gun battles.

* There has been a steady increase in gun-related crimes over the past seven years.

It is not possible to know how many more weapons would be in hands of outlaws if there were more of them in community over all.  There maybe as many weapons as there were before Port Arthur, but how many of them are kept as carelessly as many were at that time?  Outlaws do not go out to shoot people not connected to other criminal gangs;  would the innocents caught in cross fire be spared if there was not gun law?  If there is an increase in gun-related crime then we need to do more to remove guns from community/stop illegal import of them.

Americans don't like to leave their guns unloaded and locked away in gun safes "just in case" they need them in a hurry.

Their stated reason to own them as enshrined in their 2nd Amendement, is to protect themselves from a possibly future tyrannical govt.

Well, GW Bush stripped away many of their rights and it seems that the American police brutalise them on a daily basis and subdue them with batons, water cannon and tear gas when they protest.

How much more tyrannical do they need it to be before they come out en masse, guns ablazing?

Anyway, it's a folly  to think that untrained civilians carrying hand-guns, long arms or even the odd machine gun or two can protect themselves  if ever  the helicopter gunshipped, laser-aimed, smart-bomb-equipped might of the US govt were one day ranged against them.

C'mon Iapetus, with all do respect bud, how long are we going to keep using Bush for all the problems in the U.S? 10/20 years more. This present administration is just as bad if not worst for the U.S. I have to go to work but I'll be back for your reply.

On a side note.... I see some don't like my sarcasm here. Typical far lefty. 😉

I think that Obama is as bad as all the rest of them. He has not rescinded Bush's Patriot Act nor the Homeland Security Act and he didn't keep his promise to close Gitmo.

They are all only tools and flunkies of the big business interests which truly control all of the so-called Western Democracies. and our politicians are no different in that respect than yours are.

When we go out to vote, we believe we have a choice. Well, I believe that given  the political parties all serve the same master, we have no choice at all.

I never report other people's posts, even if I "strongly disagree" with what they said. I would rather that all comments remain. I support freedom of speech.

I'm not proud of any laws. I'm proud of our bill of rights that only outlines freedoms that came from God as natural human rights, that always existed from the time humans first walked on earth.

Pride has nothing to do with it, Any laws concerning guns is only endorsing gun control, even the laws allowing guns endorse gun control because it implys that the right to have them, is in fact a privladge that government can revoke. The law that makes it legal to conceal carry with a permit is unconstitutional and goes agains god, because we already have that right without a permit. We have that without government's consent, we don't need their approval, we only need God's, and God made it clear that God intends for us to maintain the ability to defend ourselves and our familys, and communitys.

Alstralia's, and America's gun laws will lead to disarmerment and that will lead to violations of many other rights and freedoms.
