Re: does anyone know about dementia?

Sorry theres been a setback.

It may be/should be easier to get things rolling because he is in hospital.

When my mum was in hospital last time they had a care nurse sortta thing because she was getting so upset, this person was always outside her door or reading to her bar when we visited or my kiddies took turns in sitting with her.

These carers would take her to parks in a wheelchair or the hospital gardens & even up to the shops.

They were so wonderful, extremely caring & patient with her.........mum was getting very confused about why she was there, starting thinking they had moved her faraway from us etc... as they moved her from room to room for awhile until i complained that it was upsetting her too much.

Theres some wonderful people/help out there, good luck Heart

Oh dear kengillard ,sorry that your hubby is in hospital ,but like some one said
It could be a blessing in disguise ..please ask the hospital to arrange a for acat to do an assessment while he is there ...the social worker will organise it and they will do it pretty quickly if he is in hospital .
Don't be afraid to tell them that you are not coping with him at home .

In saying that the high blood sugar levels would cause lots of confusion as well .
All the best .

How is your husband today? I hope the hospital are helping you.

I got confirmation yesterday that dad can stay permanently in the facility he is in, we only have a third of the usual bond because we cant use his house (my grandfather lives there) so we were a bit worried they wouldnt accept him. But they did and I'm so releived, I cant stop worrying about things so much now.

Re: does anyone know about dementia?

Saw OH yesterday and he seems a tiny bit improved...but thought I was coming to take him homeWoman Sad

and ACAT have said they can't assess him while he's in hospital, cos he has to be "in good health"!!!!

They have him on an insulin intravenous drip at the moment and he'll be in there at least until the end of the weekend.

Re: does anyone know about dementia?

My FIL was assessed while in hospital, the doctor refused to allow him to go home and he was kept there until they found him a place, Gill, try asking the doctor?

If he was "in good health" why would he need an assessment? Idiots.

Re: does anyone know about dementia?

Do they have a social worker at the hospital that can help? I've never heard anything so silly as he need to be assessed in "good health". Sounds like they are really giving you the run around.

Are you in Queensland? I have never heard any good stories about their health system, particularly for older people. I know many people here in Victoria who were assessed in hospital and not allowed to leave until an aged care place was found for them, even if its just for respite. Perhaps ask at a residential facilty, they may know some short cuts.
