I used to do voluntary work but as I don't drive it was limited to what I could do close to home.
A few years ago I was the sole carer for my blind neighbour but it got to the stage where I was glad when she went into a nursing home as I was having more and more mobility issues of my own and I also had my elderly father to care for.
These days my volunteering days are mostly over but I do ring a couple of elderly house bound ladies who have no family nearby...it is a bit of an outlet for all of us....even a 5 minute call every day makes a break in the monotony of the day.

i do what i can when i can and how i can, but dislike making mention of what i do as i feel that would undermind the reasons i do it. I will say however that often, when i offer to help, my offer is rejected or thrown back in my face.
like at the homeless shelter in Columbus, i have better than 5 years experance as a substitute custodian at a school distric. I offered to provide those services there. Not only did they decline, but treated me like lowlife scum while i was staying there.
I once picked up a guy with his thumb out, gave him a ride, only to hear him get on my case when dropping him off about the risks of picking up strangers. that made no sense to me, i wanted to take him back where i picked him up and let him walk.
