Have been a 20 pack a day smoker
For nearly 40 years and stopped cold turkey
On Monday
So have made it 4 days without a smoke
Feel like I am going crazy
And don't want to go near a shop for a while
Until I feel safe to avoid the impulse to buy
A packet
Not easy that's for sure

I think I said this before but a recent study just came out of America and the results are there is no correlation to health re 2nd hand smoke, none at all.

After about 7 days your lungs are healthy.

All I did was post an example of how you don't have to be a smoker to be hurt by it, and am attacked by two posters actually defending the act of smoking. You by calling it a legal product. There are alot of things legal that probibly shouldn't be, and alot of things that are not legal that probibly should be.
Fact is where I live, people smoke around me all the time, it's nearly impossible to avoid and has been as long as I can remember, thats as far back as sitting in the back of my father's car with both my parents smoking. As an adult, I live with smokers under me, above me, and across the hall from me. The entrance of a store or gas station, in the parking lot where I need to leave my car and retreve it. If I was to walk down the sidewalk and count the number of butts littered on the ground from sidewalk to edge of road, I'd never stop counting, it would keep me busy for the rest of my life.
Emissions from vehicles is a problem as well, but it hasn't been near as bad from what I can notice, it don't make my tounge and throat swell shut, don't seem to make me as sick. and I don't see you posting any stories about any non drivers getting cancer from it. Also, driving serves a purpose, is of a benifit, there is no nutrisional value in smoking, no matter what the tobacco companies tell you.
It's not just that smoking kills, and can even kill those who choose not to smoke through second hand smoke, it's the way it ruins health, slowly. I'd just about prefer it to kill me fast and get it over with. Both of my grandfathers, one of my grandmothers through second hand, my mother, and I expect my father is overdue. It seems to take my family in their early 60s. I have watch all my younger relitives take up smoking.
My point is that it is a major problem and it should be discussed. I'm very happy for the op of this topic to be giving it up, and wish them luck in sticking to it. That's one major accomplishment, but there are several more to go.
BTW, you can blame big oil and the auto manufactures for automoble emissions, they killed the electric car.

you have obviously never smoked and that is great but poor op is trying to do what could possibly be the hardest thing they will ever do. All smokers know the dangers of it and dont need the likes of you and you DA youtube clips trying to bring a person down.
Did you miss her posts where she was saying how down she felt? Do you feel great to be part of possibly bringing her further down?
Some things in some cases do not need to be said.

you have got to be kidding

Can I suggest that you start your own thread about your struggles with passive smoking ? Because THIS thread is about supporting Opmania and her courage in beating the nicotine addiction.

Morning Opmania, hoping today is a little easier for you.
I'm nearly half way through the book and it will be one day during this week that I join you !
Eventhough you've already stopped, I really would recomend reading his book, too. Anyone who has stopped and feels they will always struggle now and then would benefit from it.

I hope it's still going well Opto, it is never an easy thing to stop doing.
I have been smoke free for just over 9 months. I think part of the key to success with stopping smoking is you have to want it very badly to stop.
I used patches but not everybody does, a lot go cold turkey. I found after about 4 weeks I was forgetting to put the patches on so gave them the flick and coped fine.
For months beforehand I was finding I was resenting buying them so in that I knew it was time for it to stop.
Also a boardie friend gave me this tip, never use the words quit or give up, they're negative words and very undermining whereas use the word stop, that gives you control over it and I have found that works for me.
I have friends who smoke and I am fine around them.
Kudo's to you and keep going and sharing the journey.
