People who own animals have the responsibility to look after them therefore it's an implied right of animals to expect kindness.

Animals must be treated with care and protection, and free from cruelty in Australia.
Laws are in place to protect our animals...so indeed the animals do have the right to be free from cruelty.
A "right" means a moral or legal entitlement to something.

Everything has the right to exist; we do not have the right to wipe out species just because we can and consider them inconvenient. And domestic animals definitely have responsibilities to perform their duties. If cows do not supply the milk they go to knackers, if dogs do not behave in manner expected and start biting people they also go to doggie heaven etc. But while thy are here, and are fulfilling their role they have a right to be treated well, housed properly, fed well and get medical attention when needed.

Obviously animals have real rights, quite a lot of rights in our society, seeing as that inhuman excuse for a human being who bludgeoned those puppies to death is now in prison.
