Welfare dependency is quite a different thing.
And yes, it can be a problem.
But there are still a lot of people out there who are the working poor. Not everyone who receives a subsidy of some kind is sitting at home doing nothing.
I do know a lot of people working long hours just to be able to pay for their mortgage and living on pittance. They're better off on the dole and go surfing.
If they are already struggling to pay a mortgage, how is being on the dole going to help them?
Would most people think going surfing every day was better than having a roof over your head?
Sorry, I wasn't clear. I mean you can be on a dole living in government housing and go surfing. Some people don't have an urge or need to own their own place. I remembered watching a story on A current Affair where these people are happy living on the dole.
Are people on the dole eligible for state housing?
(who qualifies?)
If not, i doubt dole money would even cover for the costs of rental properties these days.

The former. Unfortunatly that doesn't stop those without shame and will happily live off your hard earned tax money.
It amazed in places like Singapore when I see eldery people working in Hawker food centres clearing out rubbish and packing dishes away. They have very little welfare support. If you don't work, you don't eat.

Not middle- and upper-class welfare. Which are certainly too generous.
What are middle and upper class welfare?

Baby bonus, childcare, family trusts...

I thought the lower class generally have more children and benefits the most from the baby bonus.

Negative gearing, franking credits.
Would most people generally think of negative gearing as a welfare benefit as such though?
I understand where you are coming from, but I'd classify it more as a tax benefit.

i cant remember anyone on benefits saying the payment is too generous
i only hear it from people who have never actually been on it
maybe if everyone who hasnt had to live on a welfare payment was forced to live on one for say 1 year we might not hear the 'is it too generous' story getting draged out year after year.
now theres a social experiment id love to see

Maybe these are the kind of people we should be discussing rather than the small minority who are happy to live on unemployment benefits.
