I agree, these people are not trying hard enough.
Don't think they know what a budget really is IMO.
No sympathy from me. Been there, done that - and did it for years.
And survived through sheer determination.

"Eventually (we will) have to face the reality that those bills are just going to become too much for us."It just takes one expense, like a new pair of glasses, and your whole budget is blown."You turn lights off, you don't turn on the AC or heating, you buy less expensive food and less of it, you don't have a social life, and you certainly don't buy new glasses. And to stay on top of those pesky bills, you pay them off every fortnight. In other words, it's called going without, not just cutting down.If things get too hard, you start selling stuff you don't need.

Why should people need to live like this? Just 'cause you did it, doesn' t make it "right" I also had to live VERY frugally, single mother with 3 kids, working my b... m off to keep a roof over our head, food on our table, NO financial help from their father etc . etc. It's not a life I would wish on anyone.

It's not a life I would wish on anyone.
Nor I. But my point was that these people are whingeing and not trying hard enough to live within their means.
The money has to come from somwhere for these benefits and I bellieve recipients should be grateful that the Government put on extra for job seeking during Covid.
It was to help people get through the hard times. If they haven't, then it's time to tighten the belt and stop whining about it.
This couple are at an age (and he was CEO of a company) to be more established, to have savings behind them to tide them over the hard times, not expecting more of a handout.

Welfare dependency is quite a different thing.
And yes, it can be a problem.
But there are still a lot of people out there who are the working poor. Not everyone who receives a subsidy of some kind is sitting at home doing nothing.
I do know a lot of people working long hours just to be able to pay for their mortgage and living on pittance. They're better off on the dole and go surfing.
If they are already struggling to pay a mortgage, how is being on the dole going to help them?
Would most people think going surfing every day was better than having a roof over your head?
Sorry, I wasn't clear. I mean you can be on a dole living in government housing and go surfing. Some people don't have an urge or need to own their own place. I remembered watching a story on A current Affair where these people are happy living on the dole.
Are people on the dole eligible for state housing?
(who qualifies?)
If not, i doubt dole money would even cover for the costs of rental properties these days.
My understanding is that they get rent assistance if on a Pensioner Concession Card incl technically even short term Job Seeker - Govt funded subsidy for private rental or a flat rate reduced rent based upon gross earnings including pension money if public housing.
Unfortunately no equal Govt funded subsidy for mortgages , which is discouragement to venture out of public housing into low cost home ownership out in the sticks
$100 less from next disbursement.... 2 million driven further below poverty line - just in time for the Christmas/New years break

i only hear it from people who have never actually been on it
maybe if everyone who hasnt had to live on a welfare payment was forced to live on one for say 1 year we might not hear the 'is it too generous' story getting draged out year after year.
now theres a social experiment id love to see
I wouldn't expect anyone on benefits to say the payment is too generous either even if they got an extra $500 a week.
The whole point of welfare is so people just have barely enough to survive and not to thrive. It's suppose to be tough. I have seen poverty first hand in some Asian countries. They don't have the government support like Australia. You don't work, you don't eat. Try living off $3 a day.
Some people on this forum may remembered me attempting to survive on $25 for food for a week as an experiment. I managed. I listed the food I ate and money spent.
