"Mental illness is just an excuse for mental weakness and is a character flaw"

I've known professional sportspeople to choke under pressure. They develop anxiety, have negative thought and worry about things they cannot control. Are they just mentally weak or is it just a form of mental illness.

Is there anything you can't blame on mental illness?

Should we be more lenient on criminals who committ crimes because they have a mental illness?

Discuss.

the motto is

there is NO normal

no 2 people are exactly the same (identical twins included)

no one can say for sure 'i have no mental problems'

its just some have worse problems than others

for those with less obvious problems to decide they get to judge those with wose problems

now there is a mental problem in itself

Kat, my mother taught me that the absolute worst thing you can say about a person is that 'they mean well'

Well, I don't lnow about anyone else, but what I say this:  fess up, Bob, you don't really give a tinkers cuss about this or any other of the topics you start. You just get your jollies from throwing out random statements and then sitting  back with your popcorn to watch the you-know-what hit the fan.

I do think that the title of this topic may push the boundaries somewhat.  I have a feeling the intent is somewhat different. I'm not sure if it's personally based research that the_bob_delusion is engaging in or he just likes to discuss controversial things. Not all of his subjects are controversial and the ones that are are normally acceptable anyway. Is this one acceptable? Well, it depends on what the intent is!

I personally don't think its for a reaction like you've suggested. I think it's to get people to engage in ways they wouldn't normally by using a tactic that catches the eye and gets those passions going. Personally I'm not a great fan of this kind of discussion invitation. But in saying that,  it is usually effective.

My view on mental illness is that it is still not understood and managed how it should be. The society that we live in demands things from us that many of us are not capable to give and along the way many people through no fault of their own slip into an abyss that they cannot get out of on their own.

In addition to a lady that I knew who self medicated and died from an accident, I have known couple other people who have spiralled downwards. One was a former friend who deliberately took the path to self-destruction. I tried a few times to help him,. At one stage I thought he may have had a chance. I tried to get him into counselling and other help but it backfired on me and he turned very nasty. Actually his mental illness made him a danger to others. He did a few rotten things.  I tried to contact his family and alert them to other things that were taking place, but there was this pride thing of "What is family stays in the family".  The last few years of his life, his home turned into a health hazard. I'm not sure where he died though.

Pride can be a terrible thing too.

A very well thought out response. Well done and thank you with a BIG Kudo to you 4chan - you have put together a very fine article and it is a very interesting read and take on things.

I know you struggle with eBay's help boards but you are a credit to this CS board.

Again, so very well done, keep it up ๐Ÿ˜Š
