"Mental illness is just an excuse for mental weakness and is a character flaw"

I've known professional sportspeople to choke under pressure. They develop anxiety, have negative thought and worry about things they cannot control. Are they just mentally weak or is it just a form of mental illness.

Is there anything you can't blame on mental illness?

Should we be more lenient on criminals who committ crimes because they have a mental illness?

Discuss.

What makes you think that people who are mentally ill are mentally weak? In many cases it is exactly the opposite. Perhaps your misguided understanding is due to limited knowledge?

Every State and Territory has a Mental Health Act. I hardly think the legislation in Australia is more lenient. Several Australians who committed crimes while mentally ill spent the rest of their natural lives in secure mental health facilities. They would have been released after a few years had they been sentenced to a prison term under the Criminal Justice System.

Are you sure the professional sportspeople you've known had a mental illness? Experiencing anxiety, negative thoughts and worry while under pressure sounds pretty normal to me.

@ Bob, I usually don't mind your controversial topics but this time your thread title shows extreme ignorance and prejudice.

" Mental illness is just an excuse for mental weakness " .....Often our greatest minds have experienced mental illness and it is possible the physical differences in brain pathways etc. may actually be the reason for their genius.

Einstein is reported to have shown signs of Schizotypal behaviours and had a son who was diagnosed with Schizophrenia, Leonardo Da Vinci suffered from Dyslexia and ADHD ( traits often associated with underlying psychiatric conditions ) and artist Paul Gauguin was Bi-polar.

Some specific mental illnesses such as Borderline Personality Disorder tend to afflict those with higher IQ's than the general population. ( cause or effect unknown at this stage )

Yes mental illness can be debilitating for many people, but for some it can be a gift as well as a curse as they express extreme talent in areas such as maths, science, music and the arts that is a result of their physically and functionally altered brains. ( there can be actual, measurable physical differences in brain development of some people with mental illness )

Bob, you really need to do a lot more reading and research on this subject before you continue pushing archaic, old school prejudice and stereotypes.

Hey Bob,  you have outdone yourself this time,  you have absolutely no idea how the brain works and what it is capable of and more so you have no idea how the brain reacts to chemical alterations in the body, the naturally occuring ones that is.

I think I know where you may be coming with on this one. The title on its own is surely one to invoke certain reactions in various people, emotions as well.

You know, there was an old view (still held by some) that people with mental illness just need to be kept busy / occupied and placing them into situations such as hard work is the answer. While that may work with a certain amount of people with a certain type of  mental illness, it won't work with the rest.
