Alan Jones, Australia's most influential radio broadcaster, will retire at the end of this month, saying doctors had told him his workload was "detrimental" to his health.
The 79-year-old 2GB breakfast host has towered over Sydney's media, and Australian politics, for decades.
His breakfast program has topped the Harbour City's radio ratings since he began in the timeslot in 2001.
During his broadcast this morning Jones told listeners: "We are living in the world of coronavirus. The most repeated statement we hear is 'we must listen to the experts'."
"Well, the experts are telling me in no uncertain terms, and not for the first time I might add, 'continuing with the present workload is seriously detrimental to your health'.
"I have listened to the experts and I am taking this opportunity to indicate to my radio family that I will be retiring from radio at the end of this month.
Despite calling quits on his radio career, Jones will continue to broadcast on Sky News and write for The Daily Telegraph and The Australian.

I'll miss listening to the old bugger in the mornings!
I don't mind Ben Fordham, but I think Ray Hadley would have been a better choice,

He does a lot of charity work and shares his cash around.

It has been reported that he has made apologies for some of what he has said on air . . . but if you listen carefully his apologies are mostly โfauxโ apologies.
Using words like โif I have offended anybody then I apologiseโ. Thatโs not an apology. I only recall ever hearing him say something like โI was wrong, what I said was wrong, I should not have said it and I apologise unreservedly for saying itโ once, all other apologies I seen reported use the wish-washy โif I have offendedโ phrase.
His one time back-pedal big time was when he made comments on sky about Malcolm Turnbull being a โtraitor to the nationโ . . . probably because if he hadnโt his hop pocket would have taken a huge hit as Malcolm had the resources to see Alan taken to court for damages and, as noted by Alan, he had no basis for making that claim.

I agree, Sydney can be full of carp sometimes.
Topping Sydneyโs radio ratings doesnโt constitute a character reference. I reckon he feels that โhe knows bestโ and anyone who disagrees gets shafted on his radio show.
When he went on his rant to Louise Herron over the projections on the Opera House he said something like โI will be calling Gladys in 5 minutesโ in an effort to intimidate and bully her (at about 5:15 in the YouTube clip)

If I was Gladys I would have refused to take his call that day.
icy, do you think he went too far in that broadcast? Iโm just curious.

My my favourite is โAlan, I am not going to take dictation from you." from Malcolm Turnbull.

He should've either retired or been given the boot long ago... he's lost heaps of advertisors over the past few years,, not to mention the costly lawsuits. My Maquarie shares might go up now ๐

so if he was say, a priest, as long as he was doing good in the community the people should excuse his pastime of groping little boys?
i dont think doing good over there gives you freedom over here to do and say nasty things.
hes a miserable man who will be missed by few and loathed by many.
wouldnt surprise me if i read 'mr jones was dead for some time before neighbours called police because of a bad smell comming from his flat, when they entered the property they found him in the hallway holding one of his awards'
