Alan Jones, Australia's most influential radio broadcaster, will retire at the end of this month, saying doctors had told him his workload was "detrimental" to his health.
The 79-year-old 2GB breakfast host has towered over Sydney's media, and Australian politics, for decades.
His breakfast program has topped the Harbour City's radio ratings since he began in the timeslot in 2001.
During his broadcast this morning Jones told listeners: "We are living in the world of coronavirus. The most repeated statement we hear is 'we must listen to the experts'."
"Well, the experts are telling me in no uncertain terms, and not for the first time I might add, 'continuing with the present workload is seriously detrimental to your health'.
"I have listened to the experts and I am taking this opportunity to indicate to my radio family that I will be retiring from radio at the end of this month.
Despite calling quits on his radio career, Jones will continue to broadcast on Sky News and write for The Daily Telegraph and The Australian.

I'll miss listening to the old bugger in the mornings!
I don't mind Ben Fordham, but I think Ray Hadley would have been a better choice,

"Will no one rid me of this turbulent priest?" (also expressed as "troublesome" or "meddlesome priest") is a quote attributed to Henty II of England which preceded the death of Thomas Becket the Archbishop of Canterbury in 1170. While it was not expressed as an order, it prompted four knights to travel from Normandy to Canterbury where they killed Becket. The phrase is commonly in modern day used to express the idea that a ruler's wish can be interpreted as a command by his or her subordinates.

And I guess that applies whether the 'ruler' rules a country or merely the airwaves. Alan should consider himself lucky his subordinates are not quite as enthusiastic as Henry's were.
Yeah right.
So you're comparing Alan Jones to King Henty II [sic ] because Jones ruled the airwaves for over 30 yrs?
I'm sure he'd be flattered!
You really are living in the middle ages....

But he didn't actually say Jacinda Ardern should cop a "couple" of backhanders, as lionrose claimed, or even a "few" backhanders..
His words , according to the article linked, were 'he hoped the Prime Minister โgets tough here with a few backhandersโ.'
Jacinda Ardern was not named as the recipient of said "backhanders".
Surely you jest!
It was a rant against devoted solely towards Jacinda Arden. Who else would he have meant to be the recipient of the backhanders?
Nor did he say she should have a "sock shoved down her throat".
Again, according to the linked article: 'The broadcaster wondered on-air whether Scott Morrison would be briefed to โshove a sock down her throatโ.'
I am speechless that you would put this in a post. It comes across as you mounting a defence of Jones and what he said.
No excuse, of course, but not exactly as claimed, either.
How about you listen to the words as they exited his mouth. Admittedly it is an episode of Media Watch, but they do play Jonesโ rant.

I'm sure, but whether they accepted it it as a comparison to Alan Jones is another question.

@icyfroth .... Perhaps he just likes to pick on women as he feels safer that way. Anyway, he backs up Hanson because she demonizes the same people he does.

Yes and no. I partly agree. But when he does pick on people, I've noticed that the extra venom is directed at people of colour and people from the middle east
