Another inaccurate model, who would have "Guessed",  Pitty about the kneejerk reaction which virtually banned the purchase of firearms and ammunition, creating further hardship for legal businesses and private citizens alike.

Models?  How many Aussies are supposed to be dead from covid.

Is an educated guess any better than a guess

I don't think we can oversimplify such a complex issue that is mostly dealt with case by case.

If there are indicators of particular trends due to localised spikes, that would still need to be taken with a grain of salt, especially when dealing with issues of a psychological nature. As I understand, there are usually so many factors involved in a suffering individual.

It was speculated that with people losing jobs business, family pressure and breakups, loneliness etc there will be a massive spike in suicide. This was also anticipated in NZ and their figures didn't show any increase either.

So no spike, and people are killing themselves at the nomal rate. That's comforting. Not.

I can see the reasoning for the potential to be there. Perhaps as a tipping point.

In the past. do you know if there have been increases in these rates during recessions, 1989, 2009 ?

"Suicide rates and the proportion of alcohol-involved suicides rose during the 2008–2009 recession. Associations between county-level poverty, foreclosures, and unemployment and suicide rates and proportion of alcohol-involved suicides were investigated."

Study cited on google search

I'm curious if the reported suicide rate may not be correct? Any chance there're dead bodies in houses but hasn't be discovered because of the lock down??

Otherwise my alternate hypothesis is that people are less suicidal if they know everyone is going thru the same thing. So maybe to make people less suicidal is to make everyone around them miserable.

I thought the same.

However we are still to go through the fallout from Covid.

It is said the recovery will take many years and the economy is yet to hit it's lowest once jobkeeper finishes and unemployment rates will rise dramatically.

So a rise in rates is still possible but I still think it may only be a tipping point to a complex problem within many.

As to victims not being found due to lockdown, I would say that if any is in the handful, insignificant towards the numbers we are comparing.
