scenario...your views?

How would you react to this scenario?

Driving along a road you see a young boy in school uniform on his way to school waving a gun and knife at passing traffic.

Would you ignore him or take steps to ensure the gun and knife are 'toys' and not the real deal?

Millions of kids have them.  There is a difference.

Probably?

Hmmm.  How many complaints do you think the school received about this boy......Their reaction says it all.

If a person sincerely thought the weapons were real, you would call 000 immediately......not muck around with the school.

That would make sense and be a logical response.

Therefore, the reaction is disingenuous as a concern that the guns were real.

And yes, toy guns are legal, and waved around by young children all across Australia.  Woman Happy

Don't like toy guns, what are you going to  do about it?

Victimise kids who play with them?

undoubtedly, 'their reaction" was that of one receptionist, probably caught unawares and unprepared in a situation she had not handled before and was not a reflection of the school's attitude  towards this or other issues, including the safety risk imposed on passing motorists and the child themselves by "playing in traffic".

Most schools take the safety of their kids and their behaviour in the community pretty seriously.

I reckon I would have rang the school  if the kid was waving a teddy bear at passing cars.... the fact it was a gun of any description is irrelevant. The child was not only putting themselves in danger, but also other road users and members of the community.

Additionally, even if Twinks did over react on this occasion, (which I don't think she did) this situation needs to be controlled before the next kid does the same and gets hit by a car etc....

I go nuts at my kids if they walk anywhere with both ear pieces of their iPods in their ears. (it is also a school reccommendation that they don't when walking to and from school). Two days ago I caught my 17 year old walking back from the shops with both ear pieces in his ear - I beeped the horn to offer him a lift home and he didn't even hear me - what hope would he have had hearing cars whilst crossing the roads or hearing cars backing out of driveways etc...?

If kids aren't able to think for themselves and look out for their own safety, then it is up to the adults to try and do it for them, and the fact that this wasn't even Twink's kid makes her actions even more commendable in my views, as she was a community member looking out for the safety of other people and someone else's child.

Too many people just turn their backs on stuff that needs to be addressed. I'd rather the over vigilant than someone who didn't care. I can't have my eyes on my kids at all times, I do try to allow them some freedom, but it is very comforting to know that there are members of communities (and ours is exceptional) who do help to keep an eye on the kids and ensure their safety. It means for me at least, that I can allow my kids a lot more freedom than I otherwise would.

Logicically I went to the school first, preventing the child from entering? 1 minute drive. Calling 000 first would have seen a long delay in police attendance.  Some of think before we act 🙂

hah! You thought it through better than I would have! I wouldn't have thought to prevent the child from entering the school grounds! Kudos, for such logical thinking...

Toy guns will have to be licenced in QLD under new firearms law.

Incorrect storage carries a penalty of $750.

The Victorian law is relatively new but  ignorantia legis neminem excusat

How ridiculous......... It's nearly 2014......hows that idea coming along. (From 2010).

Kids can legally wave their toy guns around.......whether you approve or not.

Not necessarily.  The gun may have been manufactured as a toy but if it looks real, it is classed as an imitation in the State of Victoria. (not to be confused with replica).
It has nothing to do with my approval.  Who do you think I am?  Woman SurprisedWoman LOL

She did.   She called the school.

Actually no. I drove to the school which was about a minute away as it was the quickest way to let authorities know. It would have taken the boy at least 8-10 minutes to get there at his pace, cross a busy manned crossing, walk along another road, another manned crossing and through the gate. The school and it's students were my prioriety. The police would have taken far longer. Station not close by and under staffed.

all that whilst playing around and not really concentrating on his surroundings, eh? If they were toys (do we even know yet? at least now someone may be able to give this little chap a reminder of how to behave in traffic when walking to school etc.... and in not distracting other road users or as it now turns out crossing guards responsible for the safety of lots of other kids too.

how many other road users or other kids did he distract and potentially place in harm's way before he got to school?

dunno about you, but I even get nervous when I see kids crossing the overpasses on the M1 when I'm about to drive under - just in case they drop something over the edge onto the road in front of me or on my car. Maybe not intentionally, but when kids play and are not focused on their surroundings, accidents can and do happen.

It's not even about what this kid may have done to others, it's about his own personal safety as well.

before school, in his school uniform and walking - pretty fair assumption he was on his way to school. She estimated it would take him another 10 minutes to walk there and that it took her a minute or so to drive there. Takes me and mine longer than that and our school is only 2 klm away from our house max.

They used to allow 10 minutes to walk when we lived 700m away and didn't have to cross any roads etc!...

regardless, the child was endangering the lives of himself and other people. The only identifying feature of this child was his bright shoes and his school uniform.

in the absence of knowing where the child lived or his parent's contact info, If it had have been a saturday, I still would have rang the school (or police).(don't know which one, never encountered a kid waving a toy gun at traffic, but if it was a teddy bear, I'm pretty sure I would have rang the school and informed them of the safety risk a child at their school imposed.

LOL - i even dobbed my own kid in twice - hahahaha - because he does tech stuff for the school, he has more access to stuff than most kids do on the network, and the removal of one of the blocks they impose allowed him access to a site the school wouldn't have approved of. (nothing too bad, but the site contained material that was against some of the teachings of the school),m and another time cos he put info on the ointernet that should only be available to those within the school - and he spelled the name of his school incorectly! (I was like **bleep**? You've been there for 10 years, and it's written on your shirt and just about every book you own FGS!) Let the head of middle years know that despite their vigillant education of internet usage, that it appeared that some kids needed a refresher (and a freakin spelling lesson!)

You don't actually need a licence but you need an Approval or an Exemption.  So do traders.

When was the law passed in Vic? From what I remember when looking at the information about Prohibited Weapons on the Vic Police website, it was July 2011.

As I said earlier, there is no excuse for ignorance.
