You must know more about this situation then has been reported.

Do you also know Hanson-Young personally?

Do you?

So anyone who's given me a good character reference in the past is responsible if I go and do something bad????

No, it just means they really didn't know you well enough to be vouchsafing you.

Nobody with half a brain would assume that somebody giving a reference knows everything about the person involved. References only ever refer to the good things about a person anyway. I've never heard of anyone giving a reference and mentioning the bad stuff.

Exactly.

They're usually written on the premise that if you can't say something good, don't say anything. Most of my fellow year 12 students got 2 or 3 paragraphs in their references that our principal wrote and they varied between students, but mine was 5 paragraphs long. She just kept it shorter and didn't mention certain things for those that weren't as reliable/honest/respectful/diligent/whatever.

In other words, we just write about the good stuff we see in ppl and don't mention the bits we thought were a bit weird.

A Referer can be tared by the brush of an endorsed person , through any future disreputable actions by the endorsed one relating to the original issue

Is a matter of continued confidence by those who take into account the endorsement to those that issue the Reference - this confidence is highly valued by the Referer, or else they would not bother writing a reference
