Re: snakes

My dog was chasing what I thought was a mouse under the bird cage last week. The cage is against the house. When I moved the cage for him a juvenile brown shot out and headed for the open. Darn dog chased it and the snake did a u-turn and came hurtling back towards me. He tried to get into the cockatiel aviary but the wire was too small. I think he went back under the other cage from whence he came.

By the time I shooed the dog inside, had a nice cup of tea, thought about a lie down, fetched a rake and a rifle, and went back out and moved the cage again,  he had disappeared.

I crawled under the house looking for it and found a dead headless snake. Also a brown. I thought it was just a cast of skin at first, so it had been there a while. I don't know who was repsonsible, the cat or the dog. I thought the cat had learnt her lesson and I didn't realise the dog was that stupid that he'd chase snakes.

There's been a few on the roads too.

I normally let them be unless they take up residence near the birds or the dog kennel.
