People under 30 who are unemployed will have to wait six months to be eligible for Newstart benefits, and will only be able to claim it for six months before the benefit is cut for another six months. This six-month cycle of getting benefits cut and returned will continue until someone gets a job or turns 30.

Have you not seen what they have just done to universities crikey???
They have just deregulated uni fees. That means the only people that will get a tertiary education are overseas students and kids of rich folk.
You want an architecture degree at NSW Uni? They currently pay $150,000. With deregulation we can expect to at least quadruple that.
So your average kid from the wrong side of the tracks has just been hit a double whammy from all sides. No prospect of an education. No prospect of a job. No prospect of getting food in their mouth.

Lakeland that's my concern to that the Tafe system will clogged up with teens who don't wan to be there. I have already seen it happening although at the moment over a 1/3 end up dropping out. My DD has a couple in her class that are roudy and disruptive making it really hard for others. There is deadly squat they can do about. Schools and Tafes will end up being teenage day care centre if we are not careful.

well you know what abbott says about homelessness, it's a lifestyle choice and govts can't really do anything about it. Except encourage it, it seems.

Yes, we are.. and who is going to pick up the tab Churches & Charities ( food banks, accom).
Any other Western countrie that has these seemingly unacceptable conditions? (especially for people who can only get casual jobs and are out of work from time to time).
I saw an office job for a Medical Specialist advt the other day.. casual.

So many people under 30 have young families. How are they supposed to survive while a parent is looking for a new job?

They are going to go into share accomodation with the 70 year olds that are still in the workforce.

seriously?
can they at least get into some sort of study and get the payment for studying?
is there something that helps this demographic get a job?
I mean a person under 30 are apparently the most employable, so somewhere there is a problem if they can't get a job.
Maybe this is some motivation to make em look a bit harder?
sheesh
but the mantra is, young people should be working or studying, so i guess that's where this comes from
shame that some who do genuibnely try will get caught up in this
and wait six months from when?
If they leave a job voluntarily ( I heard one story where a little 16 year old lad was helped to get a job through an employment agency, the gov paid for everything for him, even his interview outfit and work clothes etc - paid his grandfather petrol allowance to get him to and from work etc (so fully supported by his grandparents) and after a week, he just quit, with no other job to go to. Benefits were cut off, putting strain on his grandparents who had to support him etc, and then the kid turned back up at the empooyment agency and expected more help to find another job. The only reason they did, was cos he was young, and they felt for his grandfather who was distraught and disappointed in his grandsons actions. The employment officer gave him a firm talking to and told - if he just quit this job, there would be no more help from them.
, or if they are fired?
or if they leave school or other education things?
six months from when?
