staffies and greyhound owners

I was wondering if anyone has these dogs as pets,if so do you find them nice dogs?

I had a little mini foxie who passed 12 weeks ago at 19. I got a beautiful old boy corgi x on gumtree 10 weeks ago as I was awfully depressed with no doggie friend for company. On Friday I came home to find he had passed away in my bed,he had made a huge difference  to my life just in the 10 weeks I had him.

Now I am looking for another,this time not so old as I am just shattered loosing 2 in 3 months.I am currently  not able to afford the$ 450 or so for a smallish  dog I would prefer but  I see there are quite a few staffies desexed and free on offer and also a couple of greyhounds. Im thinking I may have to consider a bigger dog in order to get some company .

I live near lots of river parkland and walk my dogs about 45 to 120 min a day and they live inside with full access to a fenced yard.

I have always thought staffies an aggressive dog but iv met a couple and they seemed nice so im wondering if one may be ok...

greyhounds were another I heard were lounge lizzards that dont eat much   but somehow I worry if they are safe either?

I dont drive so a german sheppard or Labrador is out as the food would be to hard to carry. 

Staffies seem to be very common on the rescue sites and im worried as to why...

i have a cat so that worries me a bit with a greyhound, i rang about a grayhound and the owner was kind enough to say no way with a cat that greyhounds and cats never mix.

any thoughts from owners?

Honestly, from all that you have said, I would stick with a smaller dog. The right one will come along, dont rush it.

I use a pram with a blanket over it and the train.there are now 2 vets within a 20 and 30 min walk .what worries me is that with the mini foxie for the last few years she could only do smallish walks but she still loved to get out for an hour or two a day so I would pop her in her stroller or pram on her pillow and we could go on good long walks and she would just get out here and there for a little walk  but she sat up and took an avid intrest in everything, ironic that I was going to go up to the salvation army on Sat and see if I could get wonky a pram as he also could not go too far .

I could not do that with a really big dog and they do love an outing even when they are old.

im now seriously  thinking of a little 8yr old foxie from the RSPCA listed for $100. She is fully vet checked ect and with foxies averageing about 15 id have hopefully several years with her .

I got a reply from Greyhound rescue and they said it would be a long time waiting for a cat friendly greyhound.

im just going to watch gumtree  and see how I cope  till Saturday and I may go and get the old girl for $100 if she is still available ,im just not coping well without a dog and long term im thinking if I got one a bit older and then keep an eye out for a younger dog im sure one will come up it just may take some months and then id have two who could be company for each other .

I always fancied two dogs but Cricket was not keen ,the one time I took in a little jack russel id found overnight she was appauled . Thank goodness  his owner was found the next day (a meter reader had let him escape).

i think you have a good plan there, you have thought through the pros and cons of a big dog.

much better to go with the smaller dog and yes, small dogs in good health usually live quite long lives.

every new dog will have to get along with your cat of course.

The RSPCA say they test them and this one ignores cats,oscar has the whole house and for the first week or so with wonky I put oscar in a locked bedroom while I was at work till I was totaly confident they were safe together. 

Oscar then regularly got in trouble for hassling wonky ,he was the naughty one .

Most people think im just asking for trouble to get another old one but although nearly 9 is not young for a small dog its not ancient.

Well thanks to a very kind ebayer who offered to pick me up from a railway station  and take me to RSPCA  I went to see what the little 8yr old dog was like. Unfortunately she has had multiple cancers removed and they are very likely  to reocour so the RSPCA  felt we were not a good match,she will not be put down at least.

while there I also met Snowy a 9 month old foxie x cattle dog ,she was full price but I ended up getting her and will just have to jiggle some bills for a while.. 

I dont regret it as she is the most  loving little lady ,still in the puppy stage and very active but im getting used to hiding anything important . She is just go go go but its fun . It just makes such a difference  to have her although she is still trying to play with the cat which he is terrified  of ,its improving though .

He is lovley, still looks good for his age. They really do not look that heavy .Violet is 8.4 kg so good size for me.

thanks for your help at least I didnt get a greyhound  without asking first ,im just hoping more people help out with rehoming  them in NSW.
