i really dont have a problem with electric car owners/drivers contributing to the upkeep of roads they use
as we know oil based fuels are heavily taxed
originally it was a small tax implemented to build and upkeep the roads ect vehicles require.
but at some point they moved the collected tax from roads ect into 'general revenue'
so we no longer have a 'road' tax
if the money collected was used soley for road upkeep i rekon we would have the best roads in the world.
but getting back to the subject
i can see the problem
at this moment electric cars although in their infancy are possibly going to be the future of general transport
so fuel tax will begin to fall
and as our govts are addicted to the fuel tax they are forseeing withdrawl problems
so we are told 'omg, we must make these tax avoiders pay'
as i said, no problem
but who decides how much and how its collected and what its spent on?
i want to know if its kilometres driven how will they know if ive driven 10k or 100k?
will every car be required to be fitted with tracking devices?
i want details from govt before they rubber stamp new taxes
btw, i doubt i'll ever own an electric car

do you ask for a refund of petrol taxes for off-road kilometres? Of course not.
Simplest implementation would be based on odometer reading each year.
