I made a few of these - little (10 to 15cm tall) mason jars with the solar light built into them.
They were fun to make. 
I put a light coat of spray paint on the inside of the jar, to soften, diffuse the light.
I also substituted fake, plastic "flickering" candles for the solar lights, in the jars.
That's a good effect, too.
As I discovered, life probably would have been easier if I'd spray painted the outside of the jar then scratched a design onto it, but I didn't think of that, so I did things the hard way. 
So many ideas...
Cheap and cheerful, but it's an alternative; a strip of light paper, like baking paper or light wrapping paper round the outside of the jar, sticky taped on, that way the ankle biters can draw on it and feel like they're contributing.
If you're willing to put in far more work than I ever would...
These solar lights are designed to clip onto guttering, but the arm is removable, leaving a big circular case with three Big, Bright white LEDs.
Now all you need is a big glass jar and a bag of glass beads to complete the ensemble.
If the three Wise Men didn't visit baby Jesus, and bring him gifts, until the Twelfth Night (January 5/6), does that mean people shouldn't open their presents on the 25th of December?

Christmas, I don't think I'll ever fully understand it, but like a street parade, it doesn't stop it being fun to watch.
