Indonesia should stop pious rhetoric: Downer

Former foreign minister Alexander Downer says Dr Natalegawa should not be "taking shots" at Australia as soon as a new government is elected.

"Let me make this point for Mr Natalegawa's benefit: Indonesian-flagged boats with Indonesian crews are breaking our laws bringing people into our our territorial waters," he told ABC's The Drum.

"This is a breach of our sovereignty and the Indonesians need to understand that instead of a lot of pious rhetoric about the Australian Government breaching their sovereignty.

"Their people, their boats, their crews are breaching our sovereignty and this is something that needs to be worked out in a mature and constructive way as it was during the Howard years.

"Indonesia has a heavy responsibility to bear in helping Australia solve this problem, not take the view that they can liberally attack the Australian Government and continue to allow their boats with their crews bringing people to our country ... breaking our laws in doing so."

Downer was supposed to give up his lobbying job, i think he's working pro bono now. which is a good thing , his advice isn't worth a whole lot.

http://www.theaustralian.com.au/national-affairs/policy/dont-stop-the-boats-jakarta-told/story-fn9hm...

AN international law expert and sometime government policy adviser has called on Indonesia's administration to stop co-operating in preventing boatpeople leaving its territory for Australia.

Professor Hikmahanto's call is symptomatic of the heightening Indonesian resentment towards the Abbott government's anti-asylum-seeker policies, ahead of the Prime Minister's meeting with Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono next week. While Dr Yudhoyono has signalled friendly intentions towards the new government, and said nothing publicly against its boatpeople policies, Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa recently rejected the Coalition's proposed "Indonesian community engagement program".

Professor Hikmahanto, whose advice on legal issues is frequently commissioned by the administration, ministries and the national parliament, said Indonesia had been assisting Australia governments to breach their international obligations towards asylum-seekers and refugees.

But his harshest criticism was directed at the new government, saying turning asylum boats back to Indonesia would be hostile behaviour towards his country. "Julia Bishop says that Australia doesn't need Indonesia's approval, but its understanding," he commented yesterday. "Indonesia also doesn't need Australia's approval, but its understanding that we want to respect human rights."

Re: turn back boats policy doomed to failure

it would be hard to get indonesia'a understanding on such a stupid unworkable policy, most of the LNP don't understand it... probably because it was designed to win elections, not to actually work..

you'd have thought they planned a little further ahead, but no.  what a sorry bunch of failures .

Re: turn back boats policy doomed to failure

all aid should be withdrawn from IIndonesia until such time as they stop allowing their country to be used as a marshaling area for people wanting to come to Australia.

the facts are these are Indonesian boats crewed by Indonesians under the supervision of corrupt officials.

what would happen if New Zealand was a desired destination for refugees. and we allowed them to board boats in Coffs Harbour?

there would be a international outrage.
