what mispronunciation of words irks you?

aks is mine.......instead of ask.  Why can't people get that right and it is quite common, also picked up alot so I don't get why people can't say it correctly.

Re: what mispronunciation of words irks you?

I used to find my daughters friend cute, she used to say nuniform instead of uniform - pacific instead of specific.

My ex used to say lurch instead of lurk, neutralise instead of utilise, malinger instead of linger.

But they're malaprops, really, and they amuse me rather than irk me.

But what makes me shake my head sometimes is the way ppl say kilometre  as ki-lom-etre. It should be kilo-metre, as in kilo-gram.

kilo metre sounds funny to me

is it a mispronounciation or more of an an accent thing?  like vit-amins vs vite-amins  (I hate vit-amins)

Nuh. It should be killer-metre as in killer-grams. Kill -om-etres is just an affectation.

Vitamins, now there's another one. I'm used to saying Vite-amins, but I think it should really be  vitta-mins. Just going by the latin Vito as in Veeto, where it derives from.

Same as the americans say al-oo-minum instead of aloo-minium, I don't think they're right in that. Or Argent-eyne. It should be Argent-eene. That's what I reckon.

VUN-erable.

The word is VULN-erable.   And news readers seem to be the worst.  I don't believe you should be permitted to read the news if you cannot pronounce words correctly.

Should of...  had of.....

Have  NOT of  people.

That makes 2 of us.

How did that come about? It annoys me no end. When metric first arrived we said kilo metre then sort of drifted into the kil lom eter.

Hyundai drives me nuts too. He yun day. They made an add spelling out the pronunciation and we still almost all call it Hi oon dye.

I hate it when people mispronounce my surname, then proceed to tell me I am wrong when I politely correct them! X-(

My own mother told me I was mis-pronouncing my hubby's surname! X-(X-(X-(

I do understand that my surname has 2 legitamite pronounciations that are very different from each other - but only on 2 occassions have I been asked which way I pronounce it.

Once from a radiologist from Scotland and the other from a guy who has the same name on paper, but pronounces it the other way.  He gets sick of being corrected too :^O:^O:^O

We might be related kiwi.  My mothers maiden name is pronounced with a i sound (like sin) but spelt, and more commonly pronounced, with a y (like sign)

Don't think so lurker, this is "ch" issue. either pronounced like "ck" or effectively silent.

and I can tell the telemarketers straight away - they use a third pronounciation ch as in "chair"

Not a mispronunciation  but it annoys me  when people post a picture on Facebook of some random quote and has "Nuff said!" at the top... I HATE IT

You keep using that word, I do not think it means what you think it means
