Re: why should

so a private school is at fault for trying to raise the standards of our education system so that our kids at least have a shot at competing on the world stage?

No. Our system is at fault for devaluing our public system beyond salvation.

And if we want our kids to 'compete on the world stage' (whetever that means) then we would do best to follow the example of the OECD countries who DO NOT rely on private schools to educate. Whilst our standards are slipping, the countries who perform best are those where the government regards education as a government responsibility. Canada being a fantasic example of where we should be. Where we USED to be.

Dunno about you - but I do expect that my kids get a comparable education to those from other countries. Can't see why that's a bad thing - hopefully it will shame our gov into raising their expectations and standards instead of continually dumbing down the curriculum.

Perhaps have a look at which western countries have the better performing students. Pay particular attention to the high school statistics.

and as for that bit - you haven't taken into account the fact that the private schools have to build their own buildings and buy their own equipment

Hello?? At least they CAN buy their own equipment. Public schools don't even have the money for basics these days.

And if you think that private schools build their own building then you are incorrect. And yes I know we all put into a 'building fund'. As if that raises all the cash required to build a library or a tennis court. It raises a smidgeon of what is required and the government funds the rest.

Perhaps you forget that my kids also go to a private school in the city. Our school has just rented an office block from the state government to house our senior students. We pay $1 per year in rent. That is very generous of the state government. It saves the school about $400,000 per year. Meanwhile the local school 2 blocks away can't afford a fulltime cleaner anymore so the kids have to play in a hankerchief of a playground because there is no-one available to sweep the place every morning for syr-inges. That has saved the state government about $55,000 per year.

A good balance you think?
