The Ups and Downs of Synonyms (New Game)

I hope this new game will be fun...

In this new game, you have to select a word from the sentence of the previous poster and write a new sentence with a synonym of that word that is either longer or shorter than the original word.

The next poster then chooses a new word from your sentence, selects a synonym of that word that is either longer or shorter and writes a new sentence, and so on.

For example:

- She liked to spend a lot of time at the library, reading old books and pondering about life.

The next poster chooses a word, for example old, and a synonym of a different length, for example elderly, and then writes a new sentence.

- He visited his elderly brother in his tiny apartment and listened to some nice, relaxing music with him.

And so on...

- When she entered the shop that seemed to have magically appeared overnight, she had a strange feeling of déjà vu, even if she was sure she had never seen it before, let alone entered it.

CURTAIL - The woman wearing a blue linen dress sighed as she let the Golden South Sea pearl necklace drape over her fingers, murmuring, “My husband has told me to cut back on my spending, but perhaps I can persuade him that these pearls are a must.”

PEARLS - The poor woman looked at the mannequin adorned with gems in the department store and just dreamed for a minute she was the mannequin, but she was abruptly kicked back to the real world by her uncouth husband.

UNCOUTH - The outback pub was frequented by FIFO workers from the nearby mine, sheep shearers, and the occasional traveller, all of whom found the coarse name of the pub “The Sozzled @#%*” amusing rather than offensive.

AMUSING - Rather than being offended at the behaviour of the uninhibited party goers, she found their antics quite hilarious.

UNINHIBITED - The tall black-garbed nun of the Order of Piacular Abjection was grim and very restrained in her manner, and her hawklike face with its bushy eyebrows and relentless glower conveyed a sense of silent disapproval which quenched even the highest of spirits.

SPIRITS - Residents of the small village were terribly afraid to visit the ancient stone circle that sat atop the grassless rocky outcrop to the east of the town square, as they were certain that it was home to the malevolent ghosts of doomed medieval witches.

ROCKY - The path ahead was bedizened with terracotta dust, through which only scraggly clumps of grass were growing; I groped automatically for my water canteen before I reminded myself that it was quite a walk to the spring, and I would need to ration my water as I took that path up the craggy mountainside.

GROPED - Why didn't you turn on the light, she asked her husband, to which he replied that he didn't want to wake her, but he made so much noise when he fumbled around getting ready for bed, that he woke her anyway.

NOISE - She emerged from the intolerable humidity of the jungle, with its tumescent leaves hanging with indolent languor from the rubber trees, and immediately there arose a tumult from the fat-beaked birds arrayed in striking plumage of scarlet, bright indigo, deep oranges, the rich hues of daffodils, greens vibrant with their sheen… and before her was a long glistening curve of water - a river snaking its way eastwards.

INTOLERABLE - He found that even the smallest noise was almost unbearable when he had a migraine, let alone the high decibel cacophany of the nightclub which was unfortunately located right beneath his tiny bed-sitter.
