Replacing side mirror

It's on the passenger side and broken at the neck, stuck with tape at the moment which keeps unsticking despite I'm using Gorilla Tape.  . .  I drive a Toyota Echo 2005 but am wondering if I have to replace this unit with

my model one,   or can I get a used from a wrecker's or somewhere of a different car (*thus cheaper).

The glass is okk but I also want the convex replaced with flat, so probably considering a new (used) unit.

Anyt tips welcome as i know nothing about these things and couldn't do it myself unfortunately.

Replacing side mirror

As long as there are no sharp edges and it performs it's task as well as the original you can go with any door mirror.

One of a ke70 roller/early hiluz  will fit pretty well anything. The hardest part will making it look neat...hint use the part that attaches it now as a blankong plate and fit the mirror and stalk  to it

Replacing side mirror

I forgot to add it will cost an arm and a leg at the glaziers to try to get a convex piece of glass removed. I have used these stick on replacements lots. It will work to modify the mirror if the original mirror glass is physically flat but gives the convex perception they cost about 12 bucks for 8 x 5 in the shops

Replacing side mirror

Hi Viewmont,

Wow thanks for all that info.  As it is I ordered this one yesterday .which is exactly for my model.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/400221143843?_trksid=p2060778.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

I don't think it's dear i thought it would cost a lot more.  Also they said they will send it in plain glass.

Those stick on glass kits are marvellous, I hadn't heard of them before.

I got a quote from Toyota to replace the whole assembly and it was gasp $550.  They're rogues.

So once this one arrives I will have a go at fixing it on DIY ......I found another clip on Youtube that

makes it look really easy.

Thanks again   Woman Very Happy

Kate, if yours is a manually-operated mirror, and it appears that it is, then all you'll need is a flat blade screwdriver to pry off the cover plate and a 10mm spanner to remove and replace the mounting nuts. Oh, and about 10 minutes of your time. Seriously, if it takes any longer than that, you'll have done something wrong, which really makes me wonder how Toyota (and other) dealers try to justify their outrageous charges.

It's not hard to see why our insurance premiums are so bloody expensive these days, and have you noticed how the standard excess has slowly crept up over the years to around $700 or so? Pity help those poor sods who can't do their own minor repairs or maintenance (like most women, the elderly, and the infirm). Good on you for having a go yourself, and saving close to $500 in the process.

You should be fine replacing it.

But if you can't and I assume you are in Brighton, I'll come and do it for you. Smiley Happy

Bill,   thanks so much for your encouraging words.  i was only being silly making all that fuss as I thought that first youtube clip was really a laugh, but then so did they.   I certainly will have a go  -     I was a bit thrown as they talk about a tool needed ...a socket ratchet thing......  but as you say it's just a spanner, so someone around here is sure to have one.

Kopes, what a gem you are .....   I actually live in the next suburb to Brighton,   on Brighton Road,   I didn't know you were in Melbourne.   Mmmmmm  I'm thinking of all the things I can bother you with ......   no,just  kidding..... but it's so nice of you to offer and if I get stuck I may well contact you.

I'll let you know the outcome once the unit arrives which may take a while.

Please do, Kate, although I have no doubt that you'll be quite surprised at just how easy the job will be. It's rather fortunate that you bought a Toyota as they're a very user-friendly vehicle when it comes to home maintenance and repairs, and once you see how easy it is to replace the mirror, you may actually feel confident enough to try repairing some of the more common simple issues yourself.
