why did i have to request to have money released for an item i sold in september?!

Not happy with having to wait for payment to clear from paypal - 

caused confusion with buyer - him saying íve paid'and myself saying I have not recieved funds.

I may start using facebook online sales - ebay ans paypal becoming all too difficult!

This is normal for new or casual sellers and you need to plan for it. You have your payment, even if it is on hold, so you can't delay until you have the money available in hand, for items to be posted. For pick up items you are probably better to accept cash on pick up, as suggested.

As a seller, it is your responsibility to know the user agreement T&C's,  you would be subject to a 21 day hold on funds, as a new seller.  As your items appear to have been pickup only, why did you not stipulate cash on pickup. 

You would have been notified when payment was made via paypal, and your funds would have shown as on hold, so it was then up to you to either ship the item of provide collection details to the buyer.
