Australia Post's own CD mailers are specifically intended to go as large letters; if it were against the rules, it's not only a pretty useless product but in fact a trap if you buy and use them for their stated purpose! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ :^O

Not even standard letters (the ones meant to be no more 5mm thick and in an envelope no larger than 130mm x 240mm) have an explicit rule that they're only supposed to contain paper / documents.

I should just clarify that applies domestically, dave's right re: international letters, but you should be able to send anything as a large letter internationally, presuming it falls within the allowed dimensions.

Re: Anyone heard of this from Australia post

dear oh dear - not sure why the link I provided to Australia Posts own site - headed What Can I Send In Envelope - seems to not be enough to support that whilst not mentioned on other pages that relate to dimensions etc etc  - there are "guidelines" that Australia Post has provided regarding what can be posted in a regular standard envelope

DG not sure what you mean by "explicit rule" but I would have info published on Oz Post own website provides written guidance on this matter

the guidelines suggest that a regular envelope should contain only documents. the rules state only that it just has to fit in the sizes/weight limits

If you click the link I provided, you will see the explicit characteristics which qualify something as a letter.

A small letter has the following characteristics:

no larger than 130mm x 240mm

no thicker than 5mm

maximum weight 250g.

A large letter is an article which exceeds at least one of the small letter dimensions and has the following characteristics:

rectangular in shape

no larger than 260mm x 360mm

no thicker than 20mm

does not weigh more than 500g.

There is no mention anywhere about what said letters must contain; if it were an official rule, one of the characteristics would surely be "only contains paper documents".

You are right that you can send anything internationally as a letter at letter rates but if it contains anything other than documents/letters/cards etc then you have to attach the green customs form.

Contents of letters are dealt with on several other pages - none referred to on this page - just because they are on another page on the website, does not mean they don't have relevance or apply - for example dangerous and prohibited goods etc etc

I haven't had any trouble with my local PO.. In fact a couple of times, one of the guys has even sent something as a large letter which probably should have been sent as a small parcel to save me some money..

Re: Anyone heard of this from Australia post

Some AP staff will ask you what's in the large letter if they are a grump (so many of them) or just having a bad day - just say DOCUMENTS and if you are worried that you might meet the same person on your next visit then just avoid the problem by putting stamps on it and posting in the box.

That's what do if I'm in the queue and think I'm gonna get the 'pedant' - I just hold the item and post it on the way out!:^O

With all due respect Super Nova the OP was asking about standard envelopes

I think we are talking here in cross purposes  ๐Ÿ™‚  ; I assumed that the point is that "large letter" means it can go for anything from $1.20, while "parcel" is more like $5plus.  I thought that OP talking about "standard envelope" is talking about the size, not the quality of the envelope.
