And the list goes on and on and on......
5 Non Payers out of 7 in the last month and waiting on No.6 (will open a dispute tomorrow)
Sick of the lame excuses or no contact....argh!
"I didn't realise it was pick up only, I'm interstate"
"I bid on this without realising I bid on something else, and my dad is sick in hospital"
"I bid on this and it's the wrong size"
Another asked to cancel the transaction the next day, but lucky for me I'd already posted the item!
Blocks are in place, but that obviously doesn't stop non payers unless they're on the special list.
annoying thing is that by the time you waste 8 days with disputes, other potential interested buyers have bought elsewhere!
Rant over!

You're totally right, if you have several bidders on an item, then by the time the winner shows up as a non payer and you've waited the 8 days before relisting, you've lost the others.
In fact I would say that 99% of the time, when someone is outbid and they decide not to bid again on that item, they almost immediately forget it or turn their interest elsewhere. That's why I don't think people who have been outbid should be held to that bid if the highest bidder hasn't retracted a bid in say, one hour.
But that doesn't help you. You could switch to BIN as others have suggested or if the auction format is working for you, just do what you are already doing-report those non payers so they at least get a strike.
I think you've just hit an unlucky patch, I am sure most buyers aren't like that.
