Never had this problem before so just want to get my head around what happens.
Sent item rego post. Buyer contacts me to say did not get it. Check and it shows at PO ...buyer goes to PO - Nothing there so opens case with Aust post. Aust post now say its lost so I as the seller now need to waste money ringing them to say yes please ...open a case.
So once I do that what happens ...do I refund the buyer ...wait for aust post ...what about my ebay fees etc ???
Thanks.

If AP have confirmed it is lost, then you should replace or refund immediately and wait for AP to process the claim and reimburse you. If you replace there is no need to get eBAy fees back, if you refund, they will be reimbursed when the transaction is cancelled.

I've had that happen a couple of times. Both times the buyer stood their ground at the Post Office, and wouldn't leave until they found it. Guess what, they were found both times filed in a wrong drawer.

I had one of these 2 weeks ago. Buyer messaged me saying she hadn't got her parcel yet and it had been a month. Her post office told her to tell me to raise a claim as it was sent registered. I did the claim online, got a phone call from Aus Post about an hour later, confirming details. As if by magic the parcel gets delivered 2 days later!
Ask the buyer if she would be willing to wait a couple of days while AP look for the patcel, chances are it will turn up, good luck.

Me too, I was Carded, went to the post office, told it wasn't there. Went back the next day and it was. I was too quick.

Lodge a missing item here.
https://auspost.com.au/portal/#/login
It gives you a ticket number and written record of your dealings with AP over the missing item in a forum thread type format.
Your postings and AP reps replys.... always good to have these records with dates etc

What time did you go to the PO Amber?
From memory, when I am carded the earliest I can be sure it is at the PO is 4pm that day. AP couriers only take undelivered parcels to the PO when they have finished their run so I would assume that applies to the postmen as well.

It's worth going through the AP claims process, as they may well do a discretionary refund for your item cost plus the postage.
I had the exact same experience as purplepoisiniv, except mine wasn't found, they then emailed asking the item value and I referred them to the sold item on ebay- and they send me a money order for item + post satchel.
But yes, refund your buyer first.

Mine is usually 3pm, but I usually leave it until 4ish. Only because one time I went at 3 and it wasn't back yet. You can't even go by the tracking details. It will say that it's awaiting collection at XYZ PO, but that doesn't mean it's actually back there! Although one time I did call in on my way to work just after 2pm and it was back. I guess it depends on the posties workload for the day. Mine was small parcel that the postie tried to deliver. If it was a delivery van delivery, it would have gone to the larger PO on the main street (which I absolutely hate going to because the line is always out the door).
