In other words, they made 0.19b less than their usual multi-billion dollar profits. It's been four or so years of $1 stamps anyway, it was inevitable that a price was going to occur either this year or next year. Paying an extra 10/20/30/50 cents will hardly break the bank. Had they proposed a rise from the $1 stamps straight to $1.50 on the other hand it would put off a lot of buyers.
In other news, home brand 2L milk is now $2.40, having gone up another 20 cents in less than a year.
They announced the loss on the postal service back in February.
Had there not been an election pending, the price increase would already have occurred this year.
Thanks for small mercies.

I asked about the parcels at the PO today. He said they went to a conference about it the other day and then added, "What they tell us and what they actually do could be two different things."
It was almost 5 and he had to get everything ready for the truck so he didn't have a lot of time, but it sounds like they're going to have 'bags' similar to satchels and you can put whatever will fit in them up to 5kg. There are smaller sizes too but I don't know what sizes. He did mention 500g.
You can pre-pay or pay when you post them, same as satchels, so it beats me why they need bags as well as satchels, unless they're replacing them. Maybe they've got more weight increments in them.
He thinks they'll also have boxes as well as bags, but only up to 5kgs. Everything over 5kgs will be the same as it is now.
Yep, that's full of if's and maybe's and a bit confusing, but at least we know there'll be flat rate parcels up to 5kgs.

Rather than attack the soft target of the Aussie citizens to try and generate extra revenue, how about taking on the more difficult target of the Chinese who exploit the loopholes of postage rates under the International Postal Agreement.
Something is seriously amiss when one can buy an item on EBay from a Chinese seller for a total of (for example) $1.00 delivered, when in Australia it would cost $8.50 to send the same item to the next suburb.
Great - let's keep subsidising cheap Chinese imports and charge the Australian public for the cost.

It is not "The Australian public" that benefit from subsidised Chinese postage charges, perhaps the 1% of Aussies that do buy online from China gain a benefit, but the other 99% of Aussie do not get any benefit. Only extra costs when AusPost raise their prices to maintain profitability.

1%?
Do you have figures to back that assertion up? I suspect it's a lot more than 1%, but I'm not going to do the research as I'm not making the claim.
