Blocked Potential Bidders

I have my settings set so that anyone with 2 or more strikes in the last 12 months can't bid. I copped an abusive email this morning from a buyer who had demanded I lift my blocks so he could bid and didn't like it when I politely said no, and gave my reasons why. Given that he's had 4 false postives from sellers saying he didn't pay in the last 6 months, plus he is currently bidding on 89 items, I felt he was a high risk. Called me every name under the sun and signed off with 'go F yourself'. I also checked my log files and it seems quite a few people have been trying to bid on items, but can't get past my blocks. What I'm wondering is, what happens when they try to bid? Do they get a message come up telling them they can't? I'd like to think they get some kind of 'you've been a bad buyer' warning appear, but really have no idea what they actually see. Does anyone know?

Re: Blocked Potential Bidders

They get a notification that they can't bid. I don't know the wording, never having experienced it myself, but I believe it is fairly neutral.

As far as messages go, if they have communicated through the eBay messaging system, any mesage can be reported. I would assume that a message telling you to f*** yourself would be a contender for the 'buyer' being sanctioned.

I did actually wonder about that. I might report them and see what happens. I've got a pretty potty mouth myself, but I would never speak like that to a complete stranger. Thanks Dave!

Re: Blocked Potential Bidders

From what I can gather, buyers are blocked due to non-payment strikes are informed this is the reason they can't bid or buy - I am not sure of the wording, but I often get people who have been blocked due to strikes contact me and from their messages, it does seem like it gives that as the reason (eg they'll say "it says I have strikes, but... ").

If a buyer is in a seller's BBL, it will just say something like 'the seller is not accepting bids from you at this time', but all other activated blocks give the general reason, eg doesn't post to your location, need phone verification etc).

Re: Blocked Potential Bidders

Thanks DG. He did say that he had 'postage cost issues' with a seller so 'refused to go through with the transaction', which I'm guessing the seller then opened a case. He omitted to mention the other sellers he refused to pay too! It amazes me how people will bid on/buy something, then dispute postage costs. It's there in black and white what it costs, why do they then try to dispute it? I wasn't upset by his verbal abuse, but I was happy to show him that there are some sellers out there who aren't going to give in to his threats and demands. He reckons it's my loss. Nope! 2 out of 3 of the items he tried to bid on have bids, and the other one has 6 watchers. It's his loss because he can't have the items he wanted!

Re: Blocked Potential Bidders

I have only ever had the message that the seller is not accepting bids from me at this time...I guess I am on a few BBLs because of my posting on the boards as I had never bought from any of them previously.

And one seller said I had bid on too many of his items so I was banned from bidding on any more.....every one that I could not bid on was unsold and they were all relisted several times.

Re: Blocked Potential Bidders

How strange!!

It has been years since I sold on ebay, but I would have been flattered to have repeat customers.

I suppose the seller might have been worried you wouldn't pay if you won all the items, but if you've got a good record, odds are you probably would pay.

Re: Blocked Potential Bidders

The silly thing was that I was a repeat customer over a number of months.   I was buying sets of items in 4 different patterns.

I bought several items for myself and then each of my daughters decided they wanted several items but in different patterns.  It was taking me some time to make up the sets but every time I won a few items the invoices were paid within hours of the combined post invoices being sent (depended what hour of the night they arrrived).

There was never any doubt as to whether the items would be paid for, or how quickly.

Some sellers just don't know when they are well off.

I'm sure they regret their decision now that sales in general have slowed to a crawl. ๐Ÿ™‚
