Business down the drain and I feel plain foolish

Do you (like me) still sit for hours at your computer, editing and writing descriptions after having spent hours taking photos and simply wonder: "Why am I doing this?"

I certainly do and I feel increasingly like an idiot for doing it. Why ??? Because in 90% of cases, it results in virtually no buyer interest (ie watchers) and consequently virtually no sales.

. . . .and yet I keep plugging away in the vain hope that one day, some day, I might get some sort of business back. I miss the activity and of course I miss the (albeit meagre) profits.

No  . . .no need to bring out the violins. I'm not feeling sorry for myself, I'm just feeling stupid.

One of these days, I'll come to my senses, give ebay the big flick and join the real world again !!!!

No I appreciate you giving it such thought and bothering to sit at the computer and type it all !!

I have become aware over the last couple of years of how the market is changing and the pressures placed on sellers like me by the big retailers.

The problem is we really are in a bind,  trying to sell on ebay because its harder than ever to see any decent profit as a result of the combined fees ebay charges.

Thanks again for your thoughts.

Re: Business down the drain and I feel plain foolish

I sympathise with you betty, but what chance do we have when big retailers like K-Mart & Big-W can buy container loads of shoes from China, with a unit cost of around $2 a pair which they then turn around and retail for $20 a pair? The same applies to just about everything they buy in bulk.

Because we can't hope to buy in the quantities that the big boys do, those same shoes cost us maybe $10 a pair, then we need to sell them for less than K-Mart does or people won't buy them, which means that after our eBay fees and overheads, we're lucky if we make a nett profit of $4 or $5 per pair at the most.

Assuming the same applies to most of our stock, we need to be selling at least 50 items per day to come close to making even a halfway decent income, yet I don't know of anybody on eBay who is selling 50 items in a week, let alone a day. Is it any wonder that so many sellers are walking away from eBay in disgust?

I totally sympathize with you.  Having seen that Target is now selling clothing as well as toys on ebay, I don't see how I can compete anymore.  Will probably let my listings slowly sell out and then shut down.  It's a shame they have done this.

Re: Business down the drain and I feel plain foolish

The key to competing with chain stores with clothing is to not sell what they are selling now. You can often get more for last seasons claerance items thnt what they are selling now. Buyers cant see what you have in the stores, so can't price compare, and even if they know what it cost last year so what. The store can't supply.

Truth is i have sold some mainstream budget store items SH for more than equivalent item. Simply because buyer likes the design. In fact for mid range items brand name and whether BNWT or S/H makes less difference than you think. Someone takes a shine to the style/ pattern/colour, its in the ball park what they are willing to pay and so buy it.

The mistake many sellers make is put too much empahsis on brand, going for plain bland items with a big name rather than something eye catching and different by some unknown or chain brand.

Trying to guess what the value of SH clothing is becomes a total lottery if you are trying to set BINs. I start everything the same BIN and gradually reduce until sold, and I would never have been able to guess those final prices.

Like any way of making money, if anyone is capable of doing it then you either have to be more qualified/experienced/skilled to succeed or else do some hard unpleasant task no one else is willing to do. Otherwise you will simply be undercut out of business. The more accessible Ebay selling is, the more people you compete with. so what is your difference?

The survivors now will be the ones who are willing to take some losses (even unfair ones) to sell more as they are more flexible with buyers.

How many people go to target to replace their favorite trusted target item, only to find target no longer sell them? Old stock having gone out in clearance sales to Ebay sellers who now sell them. Who are these people now going to buy off? Some folks dont always want to wear "the new seasons stock' they want what they had before. Whats more they know what it will look like on, what is their size, which are usually the main impediments for buying online.

Thank you for your advice.  Gives me lots to think about.  Am branching out contacting more wholesalers, so I can offer a wider range of clothing.  Will show those big stores what real customer service is all about!  🙂
