I had a buyer bid on 2 of my items 4 days ago
i noticed today that the buyer had retracted the bids on BOTH of these items yesterday. They were both opening bids.
so i check bid history and see that the buyers name has asterixes and there is no reason for why these bids were retracted. (asterixes mean i cant add buyer to BBL)
so clicked on the buyers name and it brought up their bidding history and it said that they have had 118 bid retractions in the last 30 days
whats the deal here? i thought you had to have a legitimate reason for retracting a bid (eg bid wrong amount, or seller modified listing etc)
surely this isnt right

By policy, you do need to have a valid reason, taken from a limited list.
the asterisks are there to protect the identity of the bidder, until a sale.
if you bid, your ID would be shown with asterisks also.
all you can do is refer the bid retractions, to eBay, and ask them to look into the full retraction history of the bidder.
customer support, top right.

I thought the seller could see the full ID of bidders? When did it change?
OP, are you sure you were logged in when you checked the ID of the buyer?

you are right lyndal.. i wasnt logged in
i just checked and this bidders ID is viewable to me now and the reason "entered wrong amount" which is clearly wrong as it was an opening bid
the strange thing is this bidder has won another auction of mine and has already been in contact regarding payment
im currently debating asking why this person withdrew bids on 2 other items
this person also has feedback hidden but at 100% (over 300 FBs)

It may have been the opening bid on your auction but even you as the seller has no idea what their highest bid might have been...that would only become apparent when another bid was placed by someone else.
However, if the reason was correct, to be in accordance with ebay rules they should have placed a corrected bid immediately.
If the bidder is a buyer only s/he will always have 100% positive feedback.
I would not bother contacting the bidder....just report them to ebay for excessive bid retractions. You risk negative feedback on the current transaction if you annoy them because of the retractions, and it is unlikely that they will rebid anyway.

Good point Lyn.
I thought the seller could see the names correctly too...but with all the change around here lately!
yes, don't ask why, just leave it as far as the bidder is concerned, apart from reporting the retractions.

if they don't pay, block them so they cannot do it to you again.

You should open the case, so they get a non paying strike.
a couple of those and other sellers can autoblock them, if they choose to block bidders with strikes.
