fair enough   but can you up the bid on an auction from one id  to the other id, as i dont know as i only have one id.

Only one line of my products are auctions, and they typically do not have multiple bidders.

The literal answer is yes, you can bid on them, but it would be easily detected by eBay. There are many smart ways of being dishonest on eBay, bidding on your own auctions is not one of them.

No, that is not shill bidding.  What you are describing is what every seller aims for.....repeat buyers.

shill bidding can be tracked by your IP address and ebay to take note of these. Your example if you have an id and your partner a different id and are both using the same computer,  it comes up with the same IP address. The same if you were using your own different id's from your compiter.

This happened to me. No I wasn't doing anything wrong, my ex husband didn't pay his sellers fee's so ebay decided I had that Id to avoid payment. Which I didn't as I always pay mine. But because it was the same ip address on both accounts, they didn't care and I was penalised as a result.

Your regulars wouldn't fall into the shill category because they are winning the auctions and paying for them. EBay can see that. Shill bidders only bump the price of the auction up with no intention of winning it. Sometimes it doesn't go according to plan and the shiller wins the auction, by which case, the seller would cancel the transaction to get their fees back. If the seller has low feedback, the shill bidder will usually still leave glowing feedback to add to the number, even though the transaction that has been cancelled.

Which is something else some people with multiple accounts do. The accounts will "buy" things from each other to get the feedback score up to make it look like they are a trusted and reliable seller. They will do it for new accounts to build the score up, or if they have got a few bad feedbacks, they will do it to increase the percentage so it doesn't look as bad for buyers. Often they will be low value items for a few bucks or less.

Something else some bad sellers do is, use their other account to bid on one of their items to see what the real bidders highest bid is. They then cancel the bid. Sadly, shill bidding does go on. Sellers have been reported for such behaviour and eBay does very little to stop them. I guess they are getting the extra fees so they don't care.

There's one seller I regularly buy from. They have a few thousand BIN's and run somewhere around 10 auctions a week, all finishing within a few minutes of each other. It's not unheard of for me to win all, or at least most of those items (much to my husbands horror!!). They list different things each week and it's just more stuff to add to my collection. I need a bigger house!!

You did not answer Joe's question, but I am interested too, is it possible to perform shill bidding from different IDS owned by the same person?

--------------------------------------------

Of course it would be possible.

You would be far better off though doing it from a different computer or location, if possible.

There are a couple of problems with it.

1. If you bid up too high, you might end up outbidding the real bidders & you wouldn't want that to happen, so in reality, you would need to keep the increments small & even then, you might end up outsmarting yourself. So what would you do then, if you sell the item to... yourself? Either just pay the fees and give both yourselves excellent feedback. LOL, or withdraw it from sale? Not ideal, either of them.

2. If you make a habit of bidding on items under your other ID, I think it would show up, be easy to trace, very suss.

Given that you would only be able to bid up in small increments (if you were playing safe) I am not sure it would be worth the bother.

But i am sure it happens. I am sure I have had it done to me, where i eventually dropped out and the winning bidder withdrew their bid over 24 hours later. Which leads me to another point. I was really annoyed when i worked out that I was a victim of that sort of behaviour. I only found out later, days after I 'won'.

It made for a very sour feel & I would never have bid on another thing of that sellers, ever again. They may have sold me something but they lost me permanently. If you were hoping to establish a customer base, it wouldn't be a good move to shill bid.

You do realize you are educating people on how to shill bid? It is one thing to say it is possible but another to educate people how to.

As already stated there are many reasons for having more than one account. I have 8. I have so many people that want me to sell thier stuff, i didn't want to use up my 40 free listings on their stuff and not have any for myself.  You can have as many accounts as you want as long as you have a separate email address for each account. Paypal allow a maximum of 9 email addresses.
