fair enough   but can you up the bid on an auction from one id  to the other id, as i dont know as i only have one id.

As others have said, yes it can be done.

There are some tell tale signs which can indicate potential shill bidding.

If you click on the number which shows how many bids have been placed on an item, the bidding history will show, including the maximum bid of all but the last bidder. If you see the same coded ID showing up with small incremental bids it can possibly indicate shill bidding.

If you then click on the coded ID you can see their bidding history with the seller ( 30 day history I think from memory )

You can see how many items they have bid on, how many bids with the seller in question and the % of their total bids with that seller. Also you can see if they bid in the last minute of the auction ( almost certainly genuine bids, this is not shilling ) or days or hours before it closes ( also may very well be genuine, but not always )

If the % is high it either means they " just like that sellers stuff " ( which happens A LOT OF THE TIME ) or they may be shill bidding.

Next check the sellers current auctions. Is the suspect bidder just bidding on one type of item ie. stamps or dolls clothes,( probably legit )  or are they bidding on a wide variety of items. I once saw a bidder who was bidding on size ten motorcycle boots, a local pick-up wardrobe and an outboard motor. They had 100 % of their bids with this one seller. NOW REALLY C'mon, who can want that range of stuff and only get it from one seller ????

If you know how to check the sellers older auctions, or the buyers purchasing history you can go to the original listing and see if the one bidder has a long history of bidding with that seller on a variety of items.. ( i,m not going to tell people how to do this as it goes against ebays privacy policies but it can be done )

Do items appear to sell and then get relisted several days later ??? Does the suspected shill bidder leave glowing feedback for these items which appear to be relisted a day or two after original purchase ??? ( the seller & AP need time to deliver the item )

Does the seller often offer second chance offers claiming they have identical second hand items. ( this can also often be genuine )

All of these things can be perfectly innocent and the seller and bidder may have a genuine long term business relationship. It becomes a weight of evidence thing as to what is likely to be genuine and what is just too much of a coincidence to be chance.

At the end of the day only ebay can prove shilling, We can only have our best guess.

If you are fairly sure you are being subjected to shill bidding there are two simple ways to overcome the problem.

1) Just dont buy anything from the seller

2) wait untill the last 20 or 30 seconds of the auction ( or use an electronic snipe bidding tool ) to place your bid. This makes it impossible for the seller to shill bid the auction up.

You do realize you are educating people on how to shill bid? It is one thing to say it is possible but another to educate people how to.-said Doke

You have to be kidding me??

My understanding of a shill bid is a bid that is put on, either by the vendor or a friend of the vendor, with the express wish of driving up the price a bit with the real bidders.

It doesn't need me to educate anyone on how that could be done, I would think it would be blindingly obvious. I certainly haven't given any tips on how to set up fake accounts or anything like that.

I think the real question needs to be-how effective is shill bidding as a strategy? In my post I thought I was pointing out that it isn't actually all that effective as a long term plan & it might in fact backfire. It might work for a one off item but I doubt most regular sellers would bother.
