Cancelling atransaction at buyers request

A buyer has requested to cancel a transaction as she didn't check her daughters size before bidding. Is there a way I can cancel this transaction without receiving a defect for myself? I feel bad opening an Unpaid dispute as she has asked so politely......?

I generally let the buyer know that I will request a cancellation and she will receive a message from eBay and needs to confirm that she wants to cancel, and in doing so it will avoid any penalties to either party.  I find they are more likely to respond to the request if they believe there might be a penalty involved if they don't.  Then I cancel using "Buyer made a mistake or there is a problem with the address" (or something like that) and have never had a defect for this.  Usually as soon as the buyer has accepted eBay emails and says the sale has been cancelled and I don't need to do anything else.  If they paid already, I recommend not doing the refund until you hear from eBay because generally they will do it for you and you don't want the buyer getting two refunds.

Cheers,

Penny

Be very careful, I have been caught a few times and it has cost me my top seller rating. If they want the transaction cancelled make them initiate it. It is not worth the risk.

Since you have already opened an unpaid item case you cannot open another.

You will simply need to close the unpaid case as unpaid after 4 days to get your fee back.

And Penny gives great advice, as per usual, for next time you need to do a cancellation.

Make sure you choose the option "Buyer changed mined or there's a problem with address".  If you do that, and tell the buyer that they need to agree to the cancellation ,,, a message will be sent to them .... the you shouldn't receive a defect.  This is how I do it, and it works.  If they don't acknowledge the cancellation at their end, I believe it times out in your favour.

That's right Sue, a cancellation can be closed after 7 days if no response from the buyer.

10 days to refund before cancelling but should be able to close at 7 days if no payment made.

Thanks everyone for your advice. I had forgotten that there was an unpaid item open, so it will have to be this way this time. Hopefully I don't have a need to try the way others have suggested too soon! ๐Ÿ™‚
