Hi all
I have searched online for a while regarding this question, I think I may know the answer but havent found anything in concrete yet and I need to know.
I noticed on my listings that afterpay is offered to potential buyers. Im comfortable with this as long as I get my money straight up.
a) Does 100% of the money go to me straight away and then the buyer pays off afterpay afterwards?
OR
b) Do I have to receive a quarter of the money at the time and potentially send off an item when I havent been paid yet?
Thanks.

My original question was around the logistics of the process, ie how does the payment get from Afterpay to paying the seller? So I just had a go just to see what it looks like with ebay.
eBay currently state this in the help page for buying on eBay using Afterpay:
"Paying with Afterpay is a normal eBay transaction. The seller gets the full payment via PayPal and sends your order as usual. (PayPal currently processes all payments on eBay, including credit card, Afterpay, gift card and voucher payments.)"
PayPal are first and foremost a payment processor, and Afterpay (on or off eBay) have to be able to send payment in full to a merchant on behalf of the buyer, so I suspect Afterpay send a payment directly to PayPal. If eBay are the intermediary between Afterpay and PayPal, I'm assuming it would have been done as a pre-cursor to managed payments, where all payments regardless of funding source are funneled to eBay, and then disbursed to sellers. PayPal buyer protection is only available when a buyer logs in to a PayPal account to initiate payment, so there definitely wouldn't be any buyer protection via PayPal for a purchase, whether there is seller protection is an interesting question, but will ultimately become moot with managed payments.
With regards to the other discussion on whether sellers should have a say in whether Afterpay is available on their items, I personally would have liked the choice....I'm not the greatest seller in the world in that sense, I don't really like encouraging people to spend more money than they have at a given point in time (I'm aware there's a level of hypocrisy there since I've been accepting credit card payments for years, I guess I just vibe less with the Afterpay model ).

Hi there, I am just curious about something, I paid for an item with afterpay and the seller has said that paypal has split the payment and some is on hold. My question is why would an Afterpay payment go to paypal. Shouldn't she get an email from ebay saying she has received a payment? Thank you for your time and attention, regards from Victoria

Paypal (or Adyen if the seller is on Managed Payments) is the payment processor. eBay does not accept or process buyer payments.
If Paypal is holding funds, that would be down to the seller being new and having holds put on their money.

Because it doesn't have anywhere else to go.
Some sellers are on eBay's Managed Payments, and in that case the funds go to an eBay account before being paid out to the seller. If they are not on managed payments, then PayPal is the only way an Afterpay payment can be processed and receieved.
Normally the full payment is received up front by the seller - if the initial instalment has cleared but the remaining funds haven't, it sounds like an issue on PayPal's side, as if it was the regular 21-day funds hold for a new seller, the entire payment would be on hold.
As an aside, sellers normally have no way of knowing whether a buyer used Afterpay or not (not on eBay, anyway), so they wouldn't have been able to single out your payment as an Afterpay one themselves, unless the partial clearance made it relatively apparent, I guess (by which I mean to say, they wouldn't have seen your payment is afterpay and then said it hasn't fully cleared for whatever reason).
What's the payment status on eBay - cleared or pending?

She is a new seller, she sent me a screen shot and Payapl is holding several hundred dollars but I couldn't see anything relating to my purchase just a balance of 60 and the holding. As long as I get what I bought I'll be happy, as long as she gets access to her money she'll be happy. Thank you for your response, much appreciated 🌺

I've just had my first item purchased with Afterpay - i usually use PayPal for recieving payments, but don't know if they used Afterpay within that or some other way.
The funds aren't showing in PayPal, and it doesn't indicate anything has been paid to my bank - so nothing's any clearer for a seller where their funds sit (even though it says "the buyer gets paid in full")

Have you read the posts here in regards to "new" sellers, which is what you are deemed to be by eBay ?
Have you completed signing up AND verifying your bank account for Managed Payments ?
