What are the benefits and costs of getting an ABN?

• Australia Post Parcel Discounts

As soon as you register for GST you have to pay it.  Why would you want to give the ATO 10% of your income before you have to do so.

Pro:  Nothing to do with selling on ebay but if you want to have your own website you can get your own domain name if you have an ABN.

They have a Business 250 discount. For that you have to have orinted 250 parcel labels through their website within a calendar year, which strangely prices all the labels at higher prices than doing it over the counter at a post office. In the end, there is no real discount with this method.

It was my understanding (or misunderstanding) that to apply for an AusPost discount you needed an ABN (as well as other requirements of course) but it may not be the case. In any case, I have refrained from getting an ABN full stop.
