HOW DO I GET A VIABLE LEVEL OF SALES ON EBAY

Hi Everyone,

I am very concerned at how poorly my ebay sales are performing ... I must be doing something wrong!

My Customers are largely happy and I have 100% Feedback (680 Positives).

I principally sell top of the range branded stationery products and my total stock of about 1650 listings that I offer on ebay is worth about $400K at usual retail prices.

Mainly I match Office Works pricing, and I am currently offering 50% off that "usual retail price", with the support of my suppliers for a few months.

For past retail experience, this level of stock at usual retail prices would result in sales of about $5K per day, but at 1/2 price those sales would more than double.

On ebay I am only selling a fraction of that ... like 2 to 3% of the above typical retail store sales.

I am terrified as to what my sales will drop to when my suppliers promotional support pakages end and my prices have to go closer to usual retail prices. Given that my overheads are kept to an absolute minimum, I will still be able to disount my Office Works based pricing by say 20% but it seems to me that ebayers expect a lot cheaper than that and I will need to increase my sales at least 5 fold over what they are at 50% off !

My listings are NOT split in product groupings and that might have a bearing, but most of my customers inform me that they know what they are looking for and just type it into the ebay search engine anyway ... I do have multiple item sales so that seems to not be too much of an issue and it would take days to spilt everything into separate product categories.

Your similar experiences and any suggestions would be sincerely appreciated.

Thank you.

Another problem I saw was that you said in your post that you modelled your prices on Office Works.  Why?  They aren't exactly cheap and I suspect not doing all that well with stationery.  In my town, Canberra the city store (which was anticipated would do a roaring trade because the rent would be sky high) closed down.  I think they could not compete sufficiently with local $2 shop traders in the area selling similar products at a fraction of the cost and most if not other stock was readily available elsewhere at much cheaper prices. This may be a similar problem on Ebay.

My instinct after reading the other posts (although I'm not a seller) would be to get out of stationery altogether unless you are prepared to sell in bulk quantities only to businesses.  Maybe you could transition into something else altogether.   Its too iffy and too much competition from retailers who don't have to charge for listing, shipping and handling. You also have to remember these $2 traders buy their stock in huge quantities amongst themselves and can afford to drop their prices to suit market competition.

If I needed glue, pencils, etc etc I could name at least 6 outlets, chainstores, supermarkets, etc where I could buy this cheaper, with no shipping cost and its there in my hand now which is when I need it.  On the other hand if I wanted something specialised such as Wedding Stationery, chic scrapbooking etc  I can't necessarily buy that from supermarkets, $2 shops etc.

If you like selling stationery, you need to sell something that is special, always in demand and ensure your product is not readily available elsewhere thereby creating your own market.

I wish you all the best.

Thank you for your input.

I have just checked and of my 1650 listings, 51 do NOT have freight / shipping pre-calculated. So, 97 listings per 100 have postage showing in the listing.

I will check last three months sales to see if the ratio of 97% is the same when comparing "active" listings with "sold" items ... my sense is that it will be about the same and that 3% of my sales will NOT have postage showing, but let me do the homework.

Have you considered that could be because they have to? As in, you haven't provided the alternative option, and that you still have no idea how many people aren't buying because they can't easily narrow down what they're looking for?

I'm not trying to be argumentative, in case it comes across that way, I'm just trying to get you to see this from the perspective of people who are choosing not to buy from you, and right now that's what you need to try and address.

The two things I mentioned before - store categories and asking buyers to contact for postage discounts - are still an issue, and I know setting up your store to address these issues takes time and work, but sellers do all of that kind of work so that buyers don't need to work to browse, buy and/or pay. Everything that makes it easier for customers to do those things, increases the liklihood that they will purchase, so I hope you reconsider categorising your items, as well as perhaps look at setting up some automatic postage discounts, or using the promotions manager.

The latter can be a deal breaker, for sure - if a buyer is looking at two items from different sellers, and on one it says "contact me to see if you can get a discount" and the other one says "buy one, get one at 10% off - discount automatically applied in the cart", which one do you think they will buy? You don't need to be exact down to the cent, you just need to tell people upfront (so they don't have to message and ask, or buy without knowing the final total). If you can't give the same kind of postage discount to everyone, work out a modest average or median discount and apply that.

For whatever it's worth, since I don't post with my store account here, I sell craft supplies. My store is (almost) fully categorised, with sub categories as well (I say almost, because the more my stock expands, the more I find sub-categories become useful, but some I've not implemented yet). I'm not currently using any promotions but I have use something of a flat rate postage system - buyers can see as soon as they look at one of my listings, or add items to the cart, that no matter how many items they buy, postage will not increase after the first (highest) P&H charge, and it applies across all services offered (standard, registered, express). I do well enough here not to complain (yet), even when it's slow, I don't know about average items purchased in an order, but because the flat rate postage made it much more cost-effective and worthwhile to buy more than one item, people like to look at what else I've got, hence why store categories can play a major role in assisting sales.

Some good advice on this thread for you bulks and I think if you spend some time on your store set up n listings it will improve your sales.

Maybe not by much initially but I am confident you will see an improvement gradually over time if you support it with good customer service.

Categories and making things easier for customers is paramount, especially online when it is so easy to click back page and look at the next seller.

HOW DO I GET A VIABLE LEVEL OF SALES ON EBAY

I have just taken a walk around a loal (relatively large) what I will call a $2 store.

They certainly have competitively priced product, but none of what I saw was known brands ... seemed to me to be mainly cheaper unbranded products. I have no doubt that a lot of their stock will "do the job". However, that said, my business is 100% front line brands ... all the genuine paroduct names.

Only 8 months ago I sold the products that I currently sell from a shopping mall location retail store and sales were nearly 20 times what I now sell on ebay. The killer for me was store rental costs and wages, but maybe I was a bit hasty making the move to ebay.

Ebay say they have millions of customers in Australia, why is it that in a relatively small shopping mall from a 120 sq m store I sold 20 times more than I now sell on ebay and that was with my promotional prices being about 30% above what my current prices are set at on ebay with the 50% OFF SALE.

I must say that I am starting to regret having made the move away from the retail store.

Despite my rant (above) I will be implementing as much of what has been suggested by ebayers who have been kind enough to contribute, I am just sick of earning $3 an hour day after day. I think my expectations of ebay were too high, including my expectation that my ebay store would be comparable with the little retail store I had at the time.
