HTTP content removal.

We've been using an external host for our listing images and templates for some years without incident. Each of the past three months has seen eBay impliment changes to its content policies.

The latest recommendations are to remove HTTP content. My question is what are others using as image hosting/templates that are permitted on eBay and are low/no cost and work in well with eBay and is user friendly for both user and customers?

eBay has been quick to advise us of the need to change all of our listings, again, but they haven't really given us a clear alternative that is mutually beneficial. Reading the recommendations/policy, it gives instructions on how to find the affected listings, but what to replace them with?

Would be interested in other store owners' experiences with working 3rd party template/image hosts and what store owners are doing re:HTTP content

eBay are not saying you can't have image etc in your listings, but that they have to be with a secure connection.

That is HTTPS: instead of HTTP.  https connections are secured via encryption using SSL certificate.  It is a little more complicated than just replacing http with https, your host or you must have the certificate.  Check with your hosting company they may already have certification, and you can access your files thru a secure SSL connection, this may require you to slightly change your URL, but at no extra cost.  Alternatively you could purchase certificate yourself.  Prices vary with hosts, number of websites you want to cover or subdomains.

I changed my images and CSS stylesheet and have had no issues.

I keep my pictures on my computer and I don't use templates.

As soon as I remove all my 'powered by Turbolister' links I will be sweet. Until next time.

I don't really know a lot about this area of things, so this may be a silly question, but what kind of issues may arrise if one has been doing that (adding s to http, I mean)? Asking for a friend... ninjaaa

I've tried to find out myself, but google search isn't really getting me the results I need, however I have confirmed that the elements in my template are http, not https. I went in to edit them out (some of them are things like textures that were part of the template set up but which I de-selected so I thought it would be ok to just remove them), but deleting the link to the elements stuffed up my templates completely (backgrounds disappeared and formatting went crazy). So I added 's' to all the links instead and everything looks normal, while eBay doesn't flag my listings for non-secure links.

Sometimes when I click to view a listing from the submission page, I get that "view listing" button that opens it up in another window, but if I use any other link, or check from another browser/ account, or on my mobile, my descriptions appear as normal on the original page.

Depends if the site has certification or not.  So for eBay you can use
https:// stores.ebay
or

http:// stores.ebay

both will take you to the store.  If there is no certification

http:// prettypicture/1.jpg you see the image https:// prettypicture/1.jpg  No pretty picture

Without seeing the listing its a bit hard to tell whats going on, are you using a hosting site for images etc.?

Thanks for the reply, I'm pretty sure the site doesn't have certification, as the template was created using Freeform 2 and on the info page for eBay's new requirements it says "...the images that are included with FreeForm and FreeForm2 (such as borders and backgrounds) are HTTP, not HTTPS." and just goes on to say that eBay won't show descriptions because of this, but rather the button to view them, so it doesn't seem like they'll be updated to https.

The template itself has HTML like this: {background-color:rgb(255, 255, 255);background-image:url("http ://freeform2.robshelp.com/textures/transparent.gif"), which I first thought was superfluous because I de-selected the background image(s) and / or selected transparent like in the above example, since I had to make a selection when customising the template, and then just set background colours (or, at least that's what I thought I was doing Smiley Embarassed)  but removing the http link to the image seemed to remove all of the background stuff, while adding s to http kept everything the way it was, or so it seems when I view the listings myself.

Yes I think you are correct the site that Freeform2 uses for images doesn't have certificate

These ebay self build stores then to have tables within tables within tables (you get the picture) so altering or removing code can have unexpected consequences.  Also all the codes tends to sit there even if its not being used, so altering so URLs to  HTTPS may have no effect as that bit of code isn't being used, such as its being used for a picture gallery which is not being used.  If there are jpg images on the listing try changing one of those to https you should see a broken sign, change the img <src="http not the <href= "http

Hi guys,

We use Freeform2 as well, and as far as we can see by the updates posted by the host; there's no indication of secure certification at present or planned for the future.Freeform2 is pretty outdated and can only run on windows, it's unsecure hosting and it is a pain to update listing in bulk (we can't).

HTML code isn't my field, so we'll probably be looking at a fee based 3rd party listing builder that is in line with eBay's evolving requirements.

It means re-working 100's of listings for the 3rd (or is it 4th?) time this year, but once it's set to a secure host, it should be the last major update for some time (hopefully).

Thanks for your input.

Thank you 🙂 I'll have a play around with it tonight, see what happens. I'll likely either have to get used to a template-free description at some point, or pay for one like incense has mentioned, but if I can keep this one functional for a while (without having to have the view listing in a new window button), I'd prefer that for now as I like the info being organised into their little boxes and can't really afford the prices I've seen quoted for a new, fully compliant one. Smiley Embarassed
