Is it the old style store?

I would like to put a light colour begind my categories.

Based on that info, I'm going to go out on a limb and say it's simply how the listings display in the old store format, since (unless I'm mistaken) you haven't used anything other than eBay's options (i.e. no custom HTML), and yours display the same way.

Very likely. I never visit my store and I doubt many others do. I had a look this evening and had to revert it.

Imo, which he will ignore, the OP would be better off sorting his listings out than worrying about a pretty store.

I assume you mean that they're arranged as a gallery rather than as a list.  Any buyer can rearrange them to view them the other way by clicking on "View as..." just under where it says "84 listings found".  My basic store looks like this (old format, opened either 3 or 4 years ago) and I have the default set to gallery view but buyers can change it to a list view if they prefer it. 

When you're looking at a seller's other items (as opposed to viewing via their store) you can also arrange the listings by gallery or list view. 

I don't have the colours behind my promotion boxes (the boxes down the side and across the top) but I probably chose not to when I set it up.

It's the old store format with a full width jpeg header and 2 promo boxes (custom colour scheme).

I kept the old format becasue it provides more categories than the new layout.
