Coz they can. nifty, this has been going on for quite some time now. It's not popular, but there's zero that can be done, except build it into your Price or grin & bear it.

As previously announced, changes to the fee structure on eBay.com.au will be introduced on 6 May 2014.

These changes include:

  • Final value fees (the % charged when you sell an item) will be charged on the total cost of a sale ๏ฟฝ including any postage paid by the buyer.

You see ebay works like this - they find out what people want and then proceed to do exactly the opposite.

Mind you, it's really cramped the style of those opportunitic **bleep**s who used to list items for $5, then charge $50 postage!

That was the excuse that eBay used for introducting it, but I believe it was just a cop out because most sellers did the right thing. It's the usual case of a few people ruin it for everyone. Plus, they had to find another way of gouging extra money out of sellers. I really don't think it's stopped the postage pirates either, I still see quite a few listings with a low price and a really high postage cost.

Re: Hi, could anyone tell me why Ebay charges final value fee on postage?

I had the occasion to report a couple of sellers for postage gouging before the fees came in sheepie - from memory one was in in Taiwan was trying it on for $500.00 plus on a $10.00 auction (for an item worth a lot less than half of that postage even) - and guess what, eBay did absolutely nothing about it - and yep, it sold...................

So the bull that eBay used to talk it up as a way of stopping the postage rort was pure B S and they knew it...............

But the inequality of it is the one that really gets up my nose, where apparently US sellers only get charged the fees for internal postage rates for international sales even without using the GSP...............go figure that one out.............

Re: Hi, could anyone tell me why Ebay charges final value fee on postage?

I won a 1c auction with $40 postage a few months back. Normally I would have skipped straight over it, but the item I got was worth way more than $40.01, so I figured it was worth it. I wasn't going any higher than 10c mind you! I'm guessing plenty of other buyers were turned off by the high postage cost, so didn't bother looking. I figured the seller was still paying fees regardless, so I didn't care.

I have also bought a few things recently that had over inflated postage charges. But when I took into account total cost it was still a bargain. I was quite happy with the total price I got, and I guess people got spooked by the postal charges because I won with my initial bid.  More good stuff for me then Smiley Very Happy
