If you are selling items of an imntimate nature, items that are very expensive or items that are rare and collectible then it is a good idea to use the private auction facility. IMO using it for any other items makes the seller look dodgy.

I seem to recall (way back in the day) that the titles of all items you bought (not just items you sold) used to propogate on your feedback page. From that point of view, a private listing may have been useful way back in the day if you were selling something embarrassing or personal that a buyer wouldn't want to have displayed on their feedback page.
Nowadays though, having a private listing does indeed make you look suspicious - so totally agree with cq_tech above.

I just wondered if buyers prefer to have a private buying history , if some only buy if things are private.. maybe to hide their purchases from their husbands or the like...was just a thought.. I see so many of my buyers, when I look at their feedback histories, so many private listings..
