Item-specific Listing Removed Sick Of It???

Ebay has a specific category for Golliwogs under Dolls. There are over 30 listed. Mine was removed as it was reported and removed under the Hateful & Racist policy. Why would they have a specific category for an item if they are only going to remove it because obviously someone who has issues is offended.!!

Agree.

I won't say what i'd like to say because then i'd be accused of being racist.

You can't say anything these days without being labelled a racist. I got accused of being racist at work last year and hauled into the bosses office because I asked an Indian colleague to not come through that door when we are doing XYZ, please enter through the other door. He went running crying to the boss and I got reprimanded for being racist!!!

Then you get the mugs who get offended on behalf of someone else. I said the word black in front of a black colleague and got called a filthy racist by a white colleague. The word black was in reference to a pair of shoes. Apparently it's OK for my black colleague to say white shoes, but if I say black shoes I am a filthy racist. No, my black colleague was not offended one bit and she couldn't see what all the fuss was about.

Political correctness has gone mad. It's completely out of control. You can't even buy Golliwog biscuits these days. Arnott's had to change the name to Scallywags because some idiot took offence to it (probably someone white getting offended on someone's behalf).

I work in a very multicultural environment and when the bosses aren't there, it's just full on racial slinging off. It's all in fun and no-one gets offended. I get called white trash or spook, the Asians all get called someone else's name because "all Asians look the same". The Indians get called Middle Eastern and the Middle Easterns get called Indians or Africans. One of the Australian born of Italian decent is called wog by EVERYONE. She started that! If we thought for one minute anyone was getting offended, it wouldn't happen. We like to have fun at work because it makes the day more pleasant for all.

Well, it looks like its a case of ebay being prejudiced against gollywogs.

There's still plenty of golly wogs for sale.
I even punched in the word 'WOG' plenty of items there for sale, so i don't know which word is allegedly racist 'GOLLY' or 'WOG' ?
How's this, it's not racist but  -    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Sheilas-Wogs-And-Poofters-Warren-Johnny-Paperback-Sport-Autobiography-/35...

There is a difference between the so-termed 'political correctness', and outright stupidity, the problem is that sometimes one gets called the other when it doesn't really qualify as such.

If you replace the phrase "political correctness" with "being respectful to others", the difference is generally a lot clearer.

With that out of the way, I'm just going to go ahead and be the odd one out here, because I fully understand how/why golliwogs can be offensive, and it has nothing to do with the suffix "wog".

My brother had one growing up as a child, and to us, it was just a toy to play with, along with Tonka trucks, Barbies, et al, but we were children, and we had no understanding of what the doll's history and significance was, nor the role it can play in cultural stereotypes.

Now that I am an adult, I have taken the opportunity to research some of these issues on my own. The simple truth is that a Gollywog, much like 'mammy', Jim Crow, black face and other similar "icons", are caricutares of people, designed to make fun of them, to belittle them, to overblow characteristics and dehumanise them. They are symbols of intolerance, and even if you don't have a shred of racism or intolerance yourself, I think it's important to be able to recognise and acknowledge when something else is.

If people want to have a really good understanding of why others get offended by that, and the long-term damage it can do beyond personal offence, they really need to examine the full scope of the issue.

I recommend starting with the Jim Crow museum - a lot of good, and interesting, articles there.

I made a point of acknowledging there is a difference, and went so far as to call one end of the spectrum stupidity, but that doesn't change the fact that there are legitimate reasons why gollywogs are offensive.

Re: Item-specific Listing Removed Sick Of It???

We can't even buy black dolls here where I live. They were all pulled from the shelves because they were considered racist. They weren't golliwogs, or mammies or anything else that others see as being racist, they were just plain dolls with hair and pretty clothes. I had a black doll when I was little, even though I preferred Tonka trucks to dolls. I loved that thing to death!

We have a 15-20% black population where I live, mostly Sudanese and Zimbabwean. They can't work out why they can't buy their little girls a black doll if that's what they prefer. They are FORCED to give them white dolls because they don't have a choice if they want to buy locally. Are they considered racist because they want to give their girls a black doll? I don't believe they are. It's their personal choice. We can buy white dolls for our white children, why aren't they allowed to have black dolls for their children? THAT is political correctness gone mad!

Australia is all about tolerance and acceptance of other cultures who want to immigrate here, yet they can't buy a black doll anywhere in this area.

To me that is racist in itself....we are forcing black families to accept white dolls for their children...they have no choice.

White families don't have to buy the black dolls if they don't want to....they have a choice.

That would be what I would call stupidity, (not having any kind of black dolls available, I mean).

Tonka trucks were a mainstay in my house (two brothers), and my doll's house was a Castle Greyskull. 😄

What bothers me when issues like this crop up is the immediate response of 'polical correctness gone mad', but only from limited perspectives (IMHO).

I can only repeat the suggestion (in general, not to anyone specifically) to read up on why others can find the dolls offensive, I mean really examine the issue from all reasoned perspectives.
