Learning More about Antiques

Hi, I have been collecting Ceramics for a year now and I am REALLY HOOKED:) But I would love to learn more about them and any  other Antique. I have searched online for Courses but cannot find any. I don't know anyone in the Antique Business, so I thought the Great People on Ebay might be able to help me out:)

Buy yourself a Carters book. That's how I learned about them. They come out every year and are a bit expensive but they are the best way to learn about all Australian antiques and collectables. It has heaps and heaps and colour photos and gives the prices of things. The items are from Australian antique shops so it gives you a good idea of the value. Very handy if you go to garage sales and need to know what things are worth. Most good book shops should have them. Or you can buy a second hand one on ebay. Just search for "carters antiques book" and they'll come up. There are some pocket sized ones, but you need the big ones if you are going to learn. Best to buy one that's not too old.

The original Carters books are not being published anymore, very sad.

But you can still get the other ones.

Old Carters are still worth buying as they still provide you with information on pieces.

The best way to learn is by hands on,going to Antique & Collector fairs, asking questions, handling items to get a feel of each piece.

We love people sharing on the Antiques board, please remember to provide photo's,including base shots even if there is nothing on them as theses can still provide clues for Iding.

Someone is not always able to help with Id's but can point you in the right direction.

There is a wealth of knowledge there & we don't bite....

Some know about certain pieces, others about something else.

Join in,would love to see what you have found, each month there is thread on what you have found for that month.

Cheers kat

get to know people in the Antiques trade, attend all the Antique and Collectables fairs around, looking at items for sale, with prices on them, gives you the kind of knowledge you need.  ... it takes years and years to gather all the knowledge these people have.

also the antiques programmes on the tv are good grounding, even tho they are mostly from the UK.

There are new Carters books coming out this year. They're a different format to the old ones. I think two smaller books.
