Just came back from holidays and found myself to be a Bronze power seller.
Some people thaink this may be a good thing, and for some people it is especially those who sell a large volume of items. But for those of us who have just qualified means that we ae losing money as we now have to pay for the 1st 30 listings every month and over a year that is quite a bit of $$$ anywhere between $180 and $1080.
My biggest gripe about the whole power seller program is it is mandatory, they (Ebay) talk about that once you meet a certain level of sellers performance you automatically opt in. Opt implies option which in this case you do not have an option. When requested to remove the power seller rating they say it can only be done based on your ratings automatically.
Trying to find the pros and cos in the ebay documentation was impossible as I dont think they exist. The doco explains the benefits which is not that much for a small operator, listing multiple items (could be handy) places your items higher in the search results list (with meaningful item descriptions and tags can place you in the same search results).
I have asked Ebay to accept my feedback regarding the poor documentation and the mandatory nature of the Power sellers program. Hopefully it will become a program the sellers can opt in and out of themselves in the future.
I might start listing on Gumtree?
Please let me know your thoughts either way?
Thanks

Is it $50 per month for a basic store now??
And for everyone saying we shouldn't complain about eBay's worsening policies, I thought we lived in a democracy.
'Complaining' when something is wrong is how change is affected -- hopefully for the better.
I've been on eBay for nearly exactly 14 years now, and it's never been this poor.

I too have been around for that long and for listing on the scale I do now it has never been so cheap, as I have explained I am now paying far less in fees for the same number of listings than at the same time last year which is just as well, although I am not selling as many items in my store my profit is almost exactly the same as last year for the first 2 months.
It says in this book I am reading that by 2065 80% of women will be overweight.
See what a trendsetter I am?

When store fees were cheaper, other fees were more expensive. Nothing has changed. I remember the time we had to pay a fee to transfer Paypal funds into our bank account, and actually thought we still had to until recently.
I wish I had started selling on eBay earlier. Not for the cheaper fees, that was never an issue. For the fact that the economy was once stronger and people who started some years ago stood a chance to establish themselves and broaden their business faster.
The fact that many fees have been restructured probably means they have been made fairer at some level and by some measure. I'm sure some would argue that they now sell less. However, if you've been selling for all these years and don't realise that fees are expenses (just like purchase costs and internet bills) that need to be factored into your sale price, then you are not in business. You are giving away your time and money to a higher cause (buyers getting goods for next to nothing).
My problem with eBay is not the higher fees. My issue is that eBay makes it easy for people who are not in business to go into business. These people are not making money, effectively selling their goods for less than they can afford, considering their costs. These people are also in direct competition with businesses that want to make money.
I have also seen, on these boards, the cultivation of a buyer who demands to see the seller's receipts for the goods they purchased. They regard having bought something for more than the seller's purchase price a rip-off. As if to say that the price I purchase my goods needs to also be the price I sell them for.
In accordance with these assumptions, sellers cannot make money. Not only that, but they are obliged to have another job to fund eBay/Paypal fees, postage costs and business expenses.
Those who think in this way do not have a viable business model. If they survive, it is only because they have few goods and another source of income to support their hobby. In the meantime, they are directly competing with businesses that are trying their hardest to survive.
eBay is also a business. They have a viable business model that includes making a profit after expenses. If we are to complain to bring about change, we should at least be complaining about the right things. I would like to see the day when there are no free listings for one-time sellers. Just like there are no free ads in newspapers when you want to sell your car.
Higher store fees and lower fees in parts of the fee structure are weeding out the wrong kind of competition for the serious businesses. I, for one, am happy that this change has happened. It has made the ones who are playing the eBay game close their stores and limit the amount of items they sell for next-to-nothing.
If you want to become a seller on eBay, do your homework. Find out how much you can buy for wholesale. Factor in all your costs, including all fees and expenses. Sell your items at a fair price with reasonable profit. Then start selling and giving buyers the greatest service they will ever find in any store.
Look out for the pit-holes on the way... you do not price your items cheaper than everybody else just to be competitive. This is what's putting people out of business. Not higher fees.

Well said fishy one.
I do not rely on ebay for my income, for me it gives me something to do while I am here in Australia for enough extra funds to spend on things I would have a hard time justifying if they came out of my regular income.
I do however want to make enough to make the effort worthwhile which is why as ebay has changed I have changed with it. If my sales drop below a level that means I don't make enough then I change the way I sell, adapt or die as they say.
My business model is very different to that of even 5 years ago and if I did rely on the money I make for anything other than extras I would not have all my eggs in one basket so to speak, I would certainly have my own web site and would probably sell at markets too, fortunately not being a lover of hard work or early mornings I am not going to have to any of that 😉
It says in this book I am reading that by 2065 80% of women will be overweight.

You know, eBay is not going to kick you guys off if you disagree with some of their policies... a little more gumption, folks! 🙂

hehehe
coffee splatter on foxy's screen :^O
Honestly, I have many things to disagree with when it comes to eBay! Peeves me to see many a wrong happening when it comes to how your business can be trashed in a minute due to their unthought of policies.
Fees isn't one of them. I would love to be paying less fees but we all pay the same and they are much lower than other places where you don't make a sale. Plus it's a business expense that I can factor into the sale price and deduct from my taxes. What's to complain?
At one stage I complained. When I started out I was doing more listing and less selling. But now, it's leveled out and is no less fair than any other professional service I receive.
