Netflix tax

Just got an email from ebay...

From 1 July 2017, Goods and Services Tax (GST) will apply to fees on eBay.com.au, due to new legislation in Australia (the "Netflix Tax").

Businesses registered for GST will not be affected by this change if you register your Australian Business Number (ABN) with eBay here.

Anyone else feel a fee increase coming to cover this....

Re: Netflix tax

How do you work out that this is a new tax?

GST has been levied since 2000.....it is only now that ebay has become liable to pay it due to the Netflix tax on overseas companies.

Re: Netflix tax

Do I understand this correctly ? Since this is a tax on fees paid to ebay you will only pay the 10% GST  on FV fees if you are listing exclusively using your 40 free listings?

At least that's what their new fee table says.

Consistency has never been eBay's strength. ๐Ÿ˜„

That's from their FAQs page, which is linked in the same email as the new rate table.

It wouldn't surprise me if eBay did round up, but I currently pay 8.55% in FVF on most of my items, so they are capable of working to the extra decimal place, and with 10% GST added it would - technically - be 9.405%, however I expect in that case it will assuredly be rounded up to 9.41%

Going on what their rates table says about store fees being gst exclusive, I'd imagine they'll work out the fees the old way and then add gst to the total, rather than calculating it based on the old percentage plus 10% x our sales + postage.  I'm not fussed how they do it - there won't be a great deal of difference either way (unless one sells HEAPS).

It makes no difference how you list.....you will pay the GST on any fees you pay to ebay for final value fees for item and postage.

Re: Netflix tax

What has this got to do with the Netflix Tax?

How is ebay getting knocked off their perch?

Ebay is hardly a monopoly....they have plenty of competition.  The fact that they are the largest selling venue of their type is testament to the fact that sellers actually sell things on the site.  They can list elsewhere but do not sell as successfully as on ebay.

Re: Netflix tax

I was unable to enter my ABN, had an error message saying Country didn't match. I contacted ebay, they said I was not registed as a business account. I changed to a business account and it accepted my ABN.

Re: Netflix tax

Recieved the same email again today from eBay informing me they'll be imposing the tax as of July 1st 2017. It's my understanding that the tax has been deferred until July 1st 2018 pending a senate inquiry. I'm hoping eBay is just behind the times but....

Has anyone got any further information about this?
