Auctions do drive sales and as you say the unpredictable nature is very entertaining ( bit like one arm bandits really ). I use auctions for items that are of unknown value and also better high value, rare items that can suprise on the upside sometimes. These drive customers through the store and increase views on the BIN items. A bit like window dressing. Very handy for generating interest when things are a bit slow. If they work for you and you enjoy them ( important ), you should keep going with them in conjunction with BINs. Everyones products and business models are different. What works for one person may have a negative effect on others. There are no set rules that work the same for everyone. Digitals points on taste in jewellary on different days or occasions have a lot of merit. Keep experimenting and find what works best for you. Good luck with the venture, it sounds like you have some good ideas and should do well.

Unless you are selling collectibles then auctions are all at least $1.50 if you have a store, you get no free auction listings.
Do you sell equally across the two styles? If not perhaps start off with one store that may work best with BIN and have another id selling at auction with the 40 freebies.
Once you see if that is working you could perhaps try adding a sub caegory to your store with the other type of items, you could have a link in the auction listings saying for more of the same go to your store xxxxxxx
Although I sell mostly in the one main category that is how I run things.
Another option for testing the water is perhaps to list using BIN with best offer on your current accounts and see how that goes.
