Heres whats happened, ive been a long time seller, i sell mostly low price items which go through the letter service, which ebay does not have a shipping option for. With this my ratings dropped, mostly from international orders, because ebay said it would take some 2 weeks to arrive but the reality was it took 4-5 weeks, or it could. Also australia doesnt have tracking options other than for its parclels, a service which starts at more than anything i sell is even worth! about $25 or so.
One day, ebay suddenly decided "hey, why dont we replace the contact seller about shipping button with an automatic case opening button"
Now ebays warning me too many people are opening cases against me, which used to be a last resort for buyers who need help, but instead, im getting about 2 cases a week from people asking if i can provide a tracking number, or if i can give them the tracking information, which not even the postal service can, because theres no tracking.
Because ebay cant provide accurate ETAs, because the majority of my stuff is sent with a stamp in a letter sized box, most of my orders end up less than the unrealistic averages ebay says.
Pretty much every day i reiterate what i say in my listings to someone, that ebay is not providing accurate ETAs or the ability for sellers to manually set them, because ebay thinks its god and knows everything. Thats why their letter send fro maustralia to nigeria did not take the 10 business days ebay said, it could, but it probably wouldnt, a realistic eta would be 10-30 business days.
Over time these built up more and more, and all the while buyers still dont understand im not a corperation and give me negative feedback i cant reverse, for not providing company logos on the things i sell, like pigments i packaged myself, which dont even come with logos either, its like putting a logo on generic salt.
But what really hurt me was the fact ebay was setting unrealistic standards for my business and also the fact i would have cases opened by people even asking general questions, unaware of the serious implications of opening cases, its just way too casual.
Do you think this was unfair? ive been a seller for 4 years prior then as soon as this system was introduced everything spiralled out of control.
Where i live and the business i do alone, being incompatible with ebays ideals was enough by themselves to ruin everything.
Do you think i would be able to contest the selling restriction?
Keep in mind, if i sent everything by the most expensive service, just for a tracking number, i would lose 99% of my business, the only reason i can compete in the market is because my prices are slightly lower, since i dont overprice products and the australian dollar is doing terribly also which means everything is even cheaper for others.
Because of the nature of what i sell also, i cant really open my own online store either, unless i got lucky and people noticed the store.

How does a letter sized item to the UK cost $8??
Postage for a letter to UK is $2.75 - you didn't get tracking.
Must've been fatter than 20mm for that cost?
Customs costs are the buyers cost and it should state that in your listings
as Lyndal says

I dont normally post Internationally but every now and then one does slip through, over our 5 Accounts. When this does happen We invoice the Item as Registered Internation mail. So Far no dramas on 4 items posted since November 2015. I had a Partical Refund to do on postage a few weeks ago and was amazed that Paypal charged me fees because it was going overseas

International letter prices (except for NZ and Asia, which are a little cheaper) are currently $2.75 up to 50 grams, $7.40 for 51-250 grams, and $16.50 for 251-500 grams.
Re: refunding international payments - I've done quite a few partial refunds for excess postage, and haven't been charged any fees to do so. (PayPal do refund the original fees, proportionately, i.e. if I get an AUD $20 payment and refund $5, about $4.80-odd comes from my account, and the rest is refunded by PayPal (the buyer receives whatever the original value was, converted in their currency).
Re: an eBay rep advising to inflate handling time - I pretty much take that as an open admission their ETAs are completely unrealistic, otherwise they would have recommended alternative actions, IMHO.

Totally agree with harley, I have stopped selling international, and have got 3-5 days handling, with my Ids.
Live in the country, so can't post everyday.

Sorry. I only know they charge me about that for sales.
Never took any notice of refunds - haven't done many, usually re-send

Thanks you for an articulate and well written post.
I sympathize, it is an unfortunate situation and not your fault
eBay had announced changes late last year that meant you could only get a defect if you did not have the item available or failed to make a refund. I think these changes apply from this year but am not certain about the dates.
I thought that now, or soon, if you posted within your stated time that you could not be defected for postage time, or could have it removed.
Suppose that only applies to tracked mail and as you say, tracked mail costs outside Australia are just horrendous.
Overseas mail sent from Australia can be a nightmare, the costs of any tracked service are very high, whilst fuel prices fall to historic lows.
Gave up sending overseas this year and could not be happier.
It was causing most of my headaches for a small percentage of transactions.
eBay's delivery time estimates are completely unrealistic on most overseas transactions and many Australian ones as well.
It needs to be scrapped entirely and replaced by a system that allows a seller to manually add an estimated delivery time based on the location the item has been sold to, or better still, no delivery time estimates at all.
IN most cases, as a buyer, within reasonable grounds I DO NOT CARE about delivery times, could not give a hoot, I just want what I paid for. Surely, most people would feel this way except if they wanted something as a gift by a certain date.
I buy a bit of material from overseas and the delivery estimate times are just insane, no way does some (most) mail arrive within those times.
Because I know how unrealistic these estimates are I ALWAYS say YES in the box that says "Did your Item arrive on time?" whether it did or not.
That is because I am an experienced seller, but most eBay buyers are not and do not understand by ticking NO to that box can potentially cost a seller their eBay business, as may have happened in your case.
Very unfair. I am sure you posted on time and after you posted the item, how can you be responsible for the delivery time?
It is fairly obvious, eBay only want you to send items sold via eBay by tracked mail, especially overseas.
If you can, look at any transactions you sent tracked mail, that have defects.
Any of these, if you posted within stated time, you MAY be able to prove on time shipping and have the defect removed and that may make the difference to your account that is required to get it reinstated.
Otherwise, I am not sure what you can do to be re-nstated, perhaps nothing, perhaps other posters here may have another opinion.
Maybe your product is just not viable overseas by standard mail via eBay any more, or maybe you can find some local customers, as the Australian retail market is diverse and surprisingly resilient.
All the best with it.

Im in the "Guilty until proven innocent" situation at the moment with an international letter size item. 8 bucks to post, dont get a tracking number.
